Equator Audio Research is a San Diego, California-based studio monitor company founded in 2007 by Ted Keffalo, who previously co-founded Event Electronics in 1995. After Event was sold in 2006, Keffalo set out to develop a new line of active monitors built around coaxial driver technology — placing the tweeter at the center of the woofer cone to approximate a true point source. This design yields tighter phase and time alignment between drivers, resulting in a more detailed stereo image and a wider sweet spot compared to conventional two-way designs.
The company's product line spans two tiers: the D-series nearfield monitors (D5 and D8), aimed at home and project studios, and the Q-series mid- and far-field monitors (Q8, Q10, Q12, and Q15), built for professional control rooms. The Q-series features patented Secondary Reflection Correction (SRC) software that performs room analysis and compensation via DSP, while all models incorporate Equator's Zero-Point Reference coaxial transducers. The flagship Q15, a 92-pound two-way active monitor with a 15-inch woofer and 1.5-inch compression driver, represents the upper end of the range. Each monitor is factory-calibrated using internal DSP to match drivers to within fractions of a decibel, addressing the inherent variance between individual transducers.
