A.R. Rahman's Gear
A.R. can first be seen at :11s playing this Fingerboard. A.R. responds to a question from Variety about what instruments he plays in this article, to which he replies "Piano. I had never actually owned a piano until a few years back, just keyboards, until finally Yamaha gifted me a piano. Then I got a Steinway and a Bosendorfer. It’s such an addiction, to sit and play just to play. I also have the Continuum Fingerboard, which is such a fascinating instrument. Sometimes I’ll start playing it and not realize until it’s three hours later."

Did you use Melodyne on these projects? In which songs, in which particular moment? Sure, used it mostly on vocal tracks of Rang de Basanti, in aim of creating fresh harmonies, reducing quivers, pitch correction etc.
How did Melodyne change the way you work with audio files? Well, we have been using Melodyne for most of the vocal corrections, but I also like fooling around with it, making harmonies and things like that. I think Melodyne is an ideal and very transparent solution for this. We also tried to make percussion sound bigger with it, using transpose and stacking functions.
In this article from Spectrasonic's official site. A.R. says “There is a lot of Omnisphere in this score. I recorded many textures from Omnisphere and bounced them as audio, then mixed them with live strings and played with processing the result. We especially used the granular synthesis capabilities of Omnisphere, which was tweaked and overlaid with of a lot guitars, especially in the ‘Touch of the Sun’ and ‘RIP’ cues; Danny loved the sound.”
In this interview with Apple, AR Rahman says,"I’ve been working with Logic for almost 12 years. I use it as my writing tool because I can have it on a desktop or on a laptop. I can carry it all over."

The new studio's control room is equipped with a 140-channel Euphonix System 5-M digital mixing console with 2 DSP cores. Having worked in several top studios in the UK , USA and Canada , Rahman had the opportunity to work on and evaluate all the large format consoles currently available in the market. He chose the Euphonix System 5 for the speed, power and flexibility that he needs for his music recording and mixing, and 5.1 surround mixing. Another important factor in selecting the System 5 was support for 24-bit/96kHz audio which allows him to work in the highest quality digital environment. Recording will be done on the Euphonix R-1 48-track 24-bit / 96K digital audio multi-track recorder. The decision to use the R-1 Recorder was a natural one for Rahman, its simple user-interface, superior sound quality, and reliability.

Mr. Rahman is also an avid Stylus RMX user, “Stylus RMX is very impressive …it helps me to sketch a song in seconds and it sounds great. Most of my own library of grooves that I have made are in Stylus RMX now. I start composing a song by listening to these and getting ideas. Then I build up a rhythm part. When I have that groove, I bring in live players to record along with RMX. Then some of the live player tracks I process to blend more with the Stylus RMX sounds. Some of the live players are mixed just as they are. This is how I produced songs for the movie Slumdog Millionaire.”
