FXpansion is a London-based music software developer founded in 1999 by Angus Hewlett and SKoT McDonald. The company first gained attention with plugin format conversion utilities and the DR-008 drum synthesis instrument before releasing BFD in 2003, an acoustic drum sampling instrument that became an industry standard and earned an Electronic Musician Editors' Choice Award. Subsequent releases included GURU (2005), a sample-sequencer and loop-slicer, BFD2 (2007), and the DCAM: Synth Squad suite of analog-modeled synthesizers (2009).

FXpansion's product lineup spans drum instruments, synthesizers, and effects. BFD3, the company's flagship acoustic drum studio, provides deep sample-based drum programming with extensive mixing and groove tools. Geist2 is a beat production system combining sample manipulation, sequencing, and modulation for electronic music workflows. Strobe2 is a polyphonic synthesizer built on realistic analog modeling with MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) support, while Cypher2 is a sound design-oriented synth with over 1,300 presets. The company also produced the DCAM Dynamics suite of dynamics processors, and creative effects including Bloom, Etch, and Maul.

ROLI, the London-based music technology company, acquired FXpansion in 2016. In 2020, the BFD product line and its engineering team were sold to inMusic Brands, while FXpansion's synthesizer and beat-production titles — Strobe2, Cypher2, and Geist2 — remained under ROLI's ownership. All FXpansion instruments are available as VST, Audio Units, and AAX plugins.
