Wolfgang Gartner's Gear
"I have a lot of hardware, but most of that stuff I don’t use any more. The only hardware I really use is the Poly Evolver, but most of the other stuff gets done in Ableton with 3rd party plug-ins."
This is from a 2012 interview on The DJ List. Originally found here.
In this Instagram story video clip posted by Wolfgang Gartner, he can be seen playing some chords on his Roland Juno-106.
At :40 into this video, wolfgang gartner gives a studio tour, he says:
"... got the Juno-106 over here under the black light, it's kind of a must-have. Classic analog synth in any studio. I think I've had that thing since I was 14 years old."
The Alesis A6 Andromeda synth can be seen in Wolfgang Gartner's home studio in this Instagram photo. He says, "realized I only ever used this for like 3 sounds since I've bought it. time to tweak out."
"For plugins it's definitely Cypher and Strobe that I pull up first for just about anything. I feel like they've been a sort of secret weapon for me, and even when I turn other people onto them, they can't seem to get the same sounds out of them that I'm getting, which is the beautiful thing. To this day nothing has come out that even comes close to rivaling the quality of these synths, aside from sample-based plugins, which obviously lack the modulation and flexibility of traditional virtual synths."
Original Q&A with Wolfgang can be found here.
From a March 2008 interview on Beatport. Wolfgang is asked, "What do you feel are the strengths of each synth in your arsenal?"
He replies: "The Little Phatty is by far my favorite.
I wanted the Voyager but the only one they had at Guitar Center that day was the LP and I was in buy-it-now mode, so this is what I got! (laughs)
The sound that comes out of this thing is so unbelievably thick and fat.
The bass pierces through the mix and sits right out in front.
It is a very basic synth in essence, with not a lot of capabilities, but I think that’s one reason I like it.
It’s a synth you can just turn on and start playing and it sounds good right off the bat."

In a Q&A, Wolfgang Gartner talks about his mastering process: "It’s extremely important to have a good mastering job, but how you choose to do it is down to personal taste. I decided to start mastering my own stuff last month and invested in some nice hardware to help do the job. My main tools now are a Crane Song STC-8 compressor and an SPL Tube Vitalizer, in addition to a pair of Empirical Labs Distressors with British Mode that occasionally work for mastering, but not always. Aside from that, I just throw a limiter on top and maybe EQ it a bit in Cubase, but overall I let the hardware do most of the work."

"I use Guitar Rig a lot to process a whole host of things, not just for distortion but every type of modulation really, it's actually my favorite reverb as well, one of the verb units within it, so I use that a lot."

"To be honest when I discovered DCAM it was a major turning point, because I took about half of my hardware synths and boxed them up in the garage. These were the first virtual synths that sounded as good or even better than hardware. So in essence they simplified my life by allowing me to stay more in-the-box, and saved me a lot of space in my studio."
Wolfgang responds to the question, "Are there any software instruments that have influenced the way you work?" (original Q&A here).
"The Dave Smith Poly Evolver and the Moog Voyager are my favorite bits of analog for sure. And I have a lot of other analog gear. The Voyager is not incredibly versatile in signal flow or modulation but the sound is fatter than any other synthesizer ever made, and I don't think that point is debated much. "
In answer to, "What are your favourite bits of kit in your studio and why?" From an interview with Wolfgang Gartner on FXpansion.
When asked about saturation plugins, Wolfgang responds, "Waves Kramer tape is amazing but really drains your system, PSP makes a couple good ones too. But I haven't used those on the master in at least a year. usually on individual tracks."

In an interview, Wolfgang Gartner talks about his Tannoy Reveal studio monitors: "I have been using the same pair of Tannoy Reveal monitors since 1997, powered by a rare model Nikko amp that was made in about 1979. It’s a completely coloured monitoring system, and probably very inaccurate, but it sounds great! The old amp can drive the monitors really hard, and I push it as hard as it will go when I’m working."
