Haken Audio is a synthesizer and electronic instrument maker based in Champaign, Illinois, founded by Lippold Haken, a professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois. The company is best known for the Continuum Fingerboard, a multidimensional performance controller and standalone synthesizer with a continuous neoprene playing surface that tracks each finger's pitch, vertical pressure, and front-to-back position using arrays of Hall-effect sensors. The Continuum is offered in full-size, half-size, and Slim variants (including the Slim70 and Slim21), and a smaller portable version, the ContinuuMini, extends the same playing concept to a desktop form factor.
Every Continuum ships with the EaganMatrix sound engine, a modular DSP synthesis environment developed in collaboration with Canadian composer Edmund Eagan, which is also available as a Eurorack module (EaganMatrix Module) and in a smaller standalone unit (EaganMatrix Micro). Other products include the CVC (Control Voltage Converter) for interfacing the Continuum with modular gear, and the TriOctave expression pedal. Haken Audio also co-developed the keybed and sound engine of the Osmose synthesizer with French maker Expressive E.
The Continuum is a touchstone instrument in the MPE (MIDI Polyphonic Expression) world and has become associated with film and concert composers seeking expressive, microtonal, and continuous-pitch control. Hans Zimmer has used the Continuum in his scoring work, and Indian composer A. R. Rahman has cited it for its ability to handle the microtonal inflections of Carnatic and Hindustani music.
