Hartmann is a German synthesizer maker founded by industrial designer Axel Hartmann and based in Karlsruhe. The brand is known almost entirely for one instrument: the Hartmann Neuron, a digital synthesizer released in the early 2000s that pioneered a neural-network-based resynthesis approach developed in collaboration with Stephan Sprenger of Prosoniq.
The Neuron analyzed sampled sounds with adaptive algorithms to build internal computer models, then let players reshape the result through parametric controls grouped into "Scape" (excitation/source character) and "Sphere" (resonating body), along with three signature orange stick controllers for simultaneous X/Y modulation. A software version, the Neuron VS, followed as a VST plugin and brought the same engine into the DAW. Both instruments leaned into Axel Hartmann's distinctive industrial design language, with translucent Makrolon panels, mushroom-shaped controls, and a backlit two-tone logo.
Though Hartmann's catalog is small, the Neuron developed a cult following among film and electronic composers for its organic, hard-to-categorize timbres, and units still circulate on the secondhand market.
Hartmann has 3 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Synth Plugins, Boost Effects Pedals, and Synthesizers. Their gear is featured by 6 artists, with the strongest followings in Electronic, Rock, and Pop. Notable users include Steve Stevens, Hans Zimmer, and Firechild.
