Huss & Dalton Guitar Company is a small American luthier shop based in Staunton, Virginia, specializing in handcrafted acoustic guitars and banjos. The company was founded on October 1, 1995, by Jeff Huss and Mark Dalton, who met while working together at Stelling Banjo Works. Huss had moved from North Dakota to Virginia in 1984 to pursue bluegrass and traditional music, spending nine years at Stelling before partnering with Dalton, who brought experience with finish processes. The shop moved to its current Staunton location in 1999.
The company builds around 250 instruments a year, drawing on historical Martin and Gibson designs while adding their own structural refinements. Their guitar lineup includes the T, C, D, F, MJ, OM, O, OO, and OOO series, along with a Crossroads Series and the Valley line, which features a satin finish with a choice of Indian rosewood or mahogany back and sides. Models such as the OM-C with its Venetian cutaway are aimed at fingerstyle players, while the CM is geared toward songwriters. Huss & Dalton also continues to build banjos, a nod to the founders' roots at Stelling.
The brand has built signature instruments for Albert Lee and for bluegrass guitarists George Shuffler and James Alan Shelton, with the latter two produced in limited runs. Other players associated with Huss & Dalton instruments include Paul Simon, Edie Brickell, Bob Weir, and Mary Chapin Carpenter. In 2008, the shop built a limited series of guitars using wood salvaged from a tulip poplar on the grounds of Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, with proceeds donated to the Thomas Jefferson Foundation.
