Lawson Microphones is a Nashville, Tennessee–based studio microphone manufacturer founded by Gene Lawson, a former session drummer and recording engineer who turned to microphone design in pursuit of the warmth and character of vintage tube classics. Before focusing on microphones, Gene Lawson built loudspeakers in the 1960s and plate reverb units (sold under the Audicon brand) in the 1970s and 1980s, drawing on a long background in professional audio.
The catalog centers on hand-built large-diaphragm condenser microphones inspired by mid-century European designs. The L47MPII vacuum-tube microphone takes its cues from the Neumann U47, using a Lawson recreation of the M7 capsule with selectable cardioid, omni, figure-8, and intermediate polar patterns. The L251 tube microphone is patterned after the Telefunken/AKG Elam 251, and both designs are also offered in solid-state FET versions (the L47FET and L251FET), along with a Tube/FET combination package. Capsules are CNC-machined and hand-lapped in the company's small Nashville workshop.
Lawson sells largely direct from its website and operates as a small, family-run shop rather than a high-volume manufacturer. The L47MPII received a Pro Audio Review Reviewer's Pick Award in 1997, and the brand has built a niche reputation among project and professional studio engineers looking for U47- and 251-style tone without sourcing vintage originals.
