Mule Resophonic Guitars is a small steel and brass resonator guitar shop based in Saginaw, Michigan. Founded by luthier Matt Eich in 2012, the company grew out of a garage workshop after Eich trained at the Roberto-Venn School of Luthiery in Phoenix and spent several years building instruments for Huss & Dalton in Virginia. Inspired in part by seeing Kelly Joe Phelps perform on a resonator, Eich set out to make metal-bodied instruments aimed at working players rather than collectors.
The shop's catalog centers on a handful of core models — including the twelve-fret steel-bodied Resonator, the Mavis, the Parr Mule, and the Mulecaster, an electric-style resonator. Mule guitars are typically built with hand-shaped steel or brass bodies, slotted headstocks, and pickup options such as P-90s, and they are known for a loud, complex tone with strong natural sustain and a vintage aesthetic.
Mule instruments have become a fixture among slide and roots-leaning players, with notable users including Kelly Joe Phelps, Charlie Parr, Joey Landreth, Jeffrey Foucault, Ariel Posen, Doug Wamble, and Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys.
Mule has 4 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitars and Resonators. Their gear is featured by 19 artists, with the strongest followings in Blues, Rock, and Folk, World, & Country. Notable users include Ariel Posen, Joey Landreth, and Chris Turpin.
