Prince is a Japanese musical equipment brand established by Tsushinkogyo Co. Ltd. (Prince Telecommunication and Engineering) in 1950, based in Nagoya, Japan. The company specialized in solid-state guitar amplifiers and electronic tuners. Their best-known products are the "Piggy" line of practice amplifiers, compact solid-state combos ranging from 10 to 15 watts that were offered in various configurations — from bare-bones models with just an input and gain control to more fully featured versions with dual channels, reverb, EQ, and built-in chromatic tuners. Specific models include the PS-100 (Piggy-1), PS-50, PS-70TR, PS-200MB, BP-110W, and the PS-30T with its integrated guitar tuner.
In addition to selling under the Prince name, the company also marketed amplifiers under the Memphis brand. In 1980, Tsushinkogyo introduced the Arion brand name and pivoted toward manufacturing guitar effects pedals. Arion pedals were known for offering quality electronics at budget-friendly prices, though they used injection-molded plastic enclosures rather than the metal housings typical of competitors. As the effects pedal market shifted toward affordable multi-effects units in the mid-1980s, sales declined. In 1997, the Arion trademark and product lines were acquired by Ueno Kaihatsu Center, which continued producing pedals and tuners but discontinued the amplifier line. Prince-branded amplifiers are now collectible items among vintage Japanese gear enthusiasts.
