Best pickup swap for the following scenarios

Hello. I’m thinking of doing two different pickup swaps. One is a 2016 50’s tribute T Les Paul. And the other is a made in Korea Squier II with an HSS configuration that has been tuned down to Drop A with 12-80 strings. (Cause why not, more is more).

For the Les Paul I’m wondering money no object, should I go for Häussel 1959, Tom Holmes H550/H555 or Ron Ellis LRP? With all my pickups I prioritize the following: what’s clearer and more verging on P90 or mini-humbucker territory, Eric Johnson/Gillmour/Beck type tone, Self-resonant, self-oscillating, blooming, and scream-singing and able to balance out but not shadow my bassy cab with it’s Eminence Swamp Thing speakers.

For the HSS Strat in the bridge humbucker should I go for Seymour Duncan Slug Rail, Lundgren M6, bare knuckle Ragnarok, bare knuckle aftermath, bare knuckle Warpig, Seymour Duncan Nazgûl, or Seymour Duncan Black Winter? Again With all my pickups I prioritize the following: what’s clearer and more verging on P90 or mini-humbucker territory, Eric Johnson/Gillmour/Beck type tone, Self-resonant, self-oscillating, blooming, and scream-singing and able to balance out but not shadow my bassy cab with it’s Eminence Swamp Thing speakers, albeit this time with higher gain because of this guitar’s purpose.

For the neck and middle single coils which is best for my aforementioned goal? I’m leaning towards Bare Knuckle Irish Tours as I think the blend on middle position of 5 way selector will be brilliantly ringing but let me know, also open to Slowhand, trilogy and the sinner.

Thanks for your help and keep playing!!!

That was 100 percent my thought as well. Also have been spending a bunch of time finding alternate shapes for everything where I can find inversions with only two fingers and then as many damn open strings as possible. thanks for your time.

Best songs to play in low 6 string tunings… Drop B, Drop A, Drop G and Drop F on 6 strings

Hey what are the best 6 string metal songs to learn/play in (6 string) Drop A, Drop B, drop G, drop F or drop E? I have 12-80s on right now on a 25” scale so can’t tune above Drop B but also would have to change to 13-90s if going lower than Drop F for my sense of feel. So any bands that use Drop B-Drop E on a 6 string? I can’t use a seven string cause I don’t have one… I tried guitar tuning database but they had not nearly enough so let me know baritone/bass VI tuning players of the world your favorite 6 string songs!!

How to get away with being loud at small clubs (doom metal/harsh noise

That would allow the sound to have the chatecter of being loud without being oppressively loud… but would it be better to just be oppressively loud? Like Sunn 0)) uses 300 watt amps with 6x12s in 900 person clubs and so does Swans. I understand I can model and simulate all kinds of amp sizes but could I just be loud instead of comping a loud tone into a small package? Do any sound guys here have an opinion on how loud they will let bands be in a 100-500 person club? I’m planning on using a fully cranked Engl Savage 120 through hot pickups 5 cranked fuzz pedals and a 2x12 built for 30” baritone. I might need sunn 0)) volumes to get the punch the room effect I’m looking for even if the tone can be made at quieter volumes.

How to get away with being loud at small clubs (doom metal/harsh noise

This might sound like a stupid question but how can I set norms for the sound guy/audience/venue of how loud I wanna be, how I need to sound, why my 100 watt amp is cranked to 11 in a 100 person club, that yes the tone matters and breakup is different from pedal distortion? I need a bassy, room punch sound that can’t be neutered especially as I have no drummer or bassist. I’m trying to be Sunn 0))), the holocaust section of feed me with your kiss or 80s swans…. Because as the only one onstage… I need to be. I’m based on Chicago so I have good venues like SubT, Thalia and Reggie’s that care I just need to get to that size. Thanks!!!

Bass boost pedal for baritone guitar/Bass VI

I need the reverse of a treble boost. I need a boost pedal for the 20 hz-120 HZ range that can make my guitar punch a room like a distorted 5 string bass, or a drum played with mallets while retaining the pitch and tone of my instrument. I’m aware of the EHX mole and the DOD meatbox (which is more synthy I think) but I could also use a 10 band eq? What are your tips? And also for the sage tone it could help to have a pedal that 1. Can switch between 1/2 octave down, 1, 2 and 3 octaves down, and 2. I need a clean blend. Too many octave pedals are not only synthy but also unable to provide clean mix. I need no synth quality just pristine octave down and 75% dry 25% wet type situation. Thanks so much.

My mom’s smashed knuckle and learning acoustic guitar

My 61 year old mom the other day suddenly asked me to teach her acoustic guitar. I’m the only traditionally musical person in my family so naturally I was very excited to share my knowledge from 10 years of playing with her. And she’s really a super fast learner in 45 minutes she can play Emaj and Emin perfectly and transistion between them at speed. However we ran into a big problem. Maybe a decade ago a blade came into her finger and crushed her top knuckle on her fretting hand forefinger. She almost lost her finger if not for her wedding ring. Thus she cannot bend her third finger unless she puts it down first and even then she has to invert or partially invert her wrist. She never got proper guitar focused physical therapy because at that point she never played an instrument. Thus I tried to teach her a basic two finger power chord shape and the open Fmaj7 chord. Neither is possible for her really even though she has great form. I know about Django Reinhardt, Dave Mustaine, Tony Iomoni, Jerry Garcia, Joni Mitchell etc. but this is about my mom. What is the best solution for her? Drop D so only one finger for power chords? Training the pinky to replace the role of the third finger? Use simplified chords, shell voicings and double stops in an attempt to liberate the other fingers that aren’t broken? Should she just learn slide? Play lefty? Bend the third finger till it can be a normal finger? Has anyone gone through this and do you have any advice? She just wants to play… she’s an incredible singer with a 3 octave range but really wants to either play piano or acoustic guitar which sadly both require a highly functional third finger in most cases. Any tips… what can I teach her about what Joni and Tony and Django and Jerry did that won’t further hurt her and is adaptive and ergonomic?

The point of buying an expensive guitar?

Go to ur local guitar store, preferably not guitar center ( I went to Chicago music exchange) and play guitars you like based on sound/brand/looks and play them in order from cheapest to most expensive. I played a $2300 Paoletti, then a $4200 Fodera, then a $5000 PRS with a one piece rosewood neck, then a $4500 10 pound 10 ounce 1976 les Paul custom, then a $6200 mayones then a $6400 Catsedosa. Then I came back and played a $3400 oopegg. I’m a high intermediate player and with the exception of the Fodera vs Paoletti every step up was noticeable and physically changed and relaxed my playing. I have an 80s Squier II HSS strat worth about 400 and 2016 les Paul gold top worth about 2500. The 2500 les Paul isn’t value… it’s branding. A used mayones is only 500 more (3500) but it’s all going to quality. If you stick to brands like Ormsby, Dunable, skervesen, mayones, legator, aristides, prs, catsedosa, fodera, Alembic, Caparison, Kiesel, Suhr, OD guitars, Relic, etc you will be getting near 1:1 features/beauty to dollar. Avoid these for value reasons: Ibanez if not J custom, ESP if not exhibition, Fender if not master built, all Jackson’s, all deans, all Kramers, and all bc rich. The most universally good brands even under 2000 imo are PRS and dunable, maybe skervesen. Buy your gear on reverb for a larger selection or find a guitar store near u (check out music is win’s guitar store tour on YouTube) he goes to one store in all 50 US states. Hope that helps!! You frankly may not notice a difference until 4-10 years of playing or high intermediate level. It took me 11 years of playing, 2 years of daily playing to get to a point where I always knew where the value was when I played it. Good luck

Lowest tuning for various scale lengths

I should preface this by saying I abuse general conventions of tuning myself… I use GGCCA#A# on a 24 1/4 scale les Paul and Drop A on a 25” fender strat. However, the more I play baritone guitars in standard/Drop D/drop c when I’m in guitar stores the more I’ve become a fetishist for stability. If we’re being super strict on things like no lower than drop D on a les paul, drop c on a strat, E standard on a mustang, what would be the most narrowminded limit for various semi-common scale lengths. As follows: 23”, 24”, 25”, 26”, 27”, 28”, 29” and finally 30”. Thanks!!!

Emma Ruth Rundle/Chelsea Wolfe tone

Hey what makes that incredible reverbed gothic country tone on the song “we hit a wall” by Chelsea Wolfe? I know it’s essentially a 28” baritone in Drop A/B standard/Drop B but there’s something so special about it that transcends reverb and amp choice and I’m wondering what could make that sorta fantasy reverb almost a spring with a plate with a cathedral all at once?

First songs to use tunings

Hey out of interest does anyone know what the first songs to use various tunings were. Drop D, then drop C# then drop C etc all the way down to Drop E0, or Eb standard all the way down to two octaves down? It would be an interesting way to look at the evolution of music and how many “metal” ideas derive from the blues.

Tube amp for harsh noise/shoegaze/thall/funeral doom metal/black metal/free jazz/powerviolence

I live by Chicago music exchange. I recognize that that is a huge genre spread, but in all honesty I have no idea how to describe my music. I’m 99% set on a tube amp for tone, as I can afford tube amp that’s just as loud as a solid state even if the tube is more expensive per watt. Unfortunately tho Chicago music exchange is currently lacking EVERY SINGLE amp I talked about, so relying on reverb, that’s why I asked here. Really I’m not really asking for a genre specific recommendation, I’m just trying to overcome genre saturation and decision paralysis because these all look the same roughly: 100-300 tube watts, dark tone, multiple channels or one easily overdrivable channel, vintage/low-end boutique/used style and a price of 800-3,000 dollars. So basically I am looking for anecdotal stories on what more experienced players “settled on”, what stayed with their rig tested for years, among the ones that I listed as they are currently available on reverb and used by bands that I respect and know the sound of so I can predict how they’d work in my sound. Hope this helps

Tube amp for harsh noise/shoegaze/thall/funeral doom metal/black metal/free jazz/powerviolence

Hey guys: looking for a head to go together with a PRS 2x12 as a replacement for my useless and disgusting MC15 Marshall solid state combo. I’m not really looking for “the best” amp overall, just an amp that would work for above styles among a few options. Those options are Sovtek mig-100u (my initial first choice), Sound City 200 Plus, Laney klipp, Engl Savage 120, WEM ER40 or Orange Thunderverb 200. Lmk ur thoughts. I have all of these available for between 600 -2000 somewhere on reverb, which would be my general price range, so it doesn’t really matter price wise within that range. Thanks— patchouli cyanide aka juniper!

Trying to decide on a new amp

rad I'm sorry, i know the whole djent and downtune scene gets a lot of hate, but you might be surprised how bands are using Drop E, Double Drop A, or even Double Drop E on a routine basis, ffs I saw a video tuning town to Triple Drop A on a ten string, which even i agree is unceccary, but the point being it isn't very funny. also sub is real and if you can't hear it you can feel it, that's the diffrence between Sunn O))) and any other doom band.

Trying to decide on a new amp

Ok maybe I was ignorant, but we’re talking 35-120 hz boost, Drop E or lower tuning and 100-150db performance volumes. That’s what I’m saying, that’s what I’m needing!!!!

Trying to decide on a new amp

I do like the soldano but the entire point of getting this amp is to be able to push out Double drop A and lower at 120db so I need like Sunn 0))), Bongripper, Sleep, Electric Wizard level bass punch. In fact I'm literally getting a DOD meatbox just to push 15 hz and 35hz and then still use a graphic eq to push 5-90 hz plus like 5 bass-tuned fuzzes always on. I don't think you understand what i'm looking for.

Pickups For djent/Drone metal fusion

i'm making a metal band kinda 1/3 drone metal, 1/3 Djent, 1/3 melodeath in sound and i'm looking for ultra-high output pickups for that style to replace my stock. i have a fender strat HSS that tuned between C standard and A standard and a Les paul tuned between E standard and Drop B. For the les paul i'm thinking either lundgren m6, Bare knuckle warpig, bare knuckle aftermath, bare knuckle juggernaut, bare knuckle painkiller, seymour duncan black winter, Seymour duncan alpha/omega, or fishman fluence modern. Then the Strat single coils probably Bare Knuckle sinner, Bare knuckle irish tour, Fender Texas Special, Bare Knuckle Slowhand, Bare knuckle cobra, or Bare knuckle Trilogy. Does anyone have any advice for me?

Trying to decide on a new amp

Here are my considerations: bogner Uberschall, Sunn model T (Bassman variety), Orange Thunderverb 200w, Verellen Meatsmoke 300w Bogner Toneking, Diezel vh4, Diezel Herbert, Mesa/Boogie Triple Rectifier, peavy 6505, soldano sl100 as you can see all those amps are 100 watts to 300 watts. I'm looking for modern metal tones, but here's the problem i'm playing both extremely low sustain styles like where i would want a New millennium Cynanide christ type tone, and extremely high sustain styles where I would want a Sunn 0))) type tone. Is there anything that can hit both those departments money no object?

Ultra-Heavy Gauge 6-string strings

Yeah I’m looking for guages in the Drop A to triple drop C range on 6 string. For me when the top string is a 4 I use a 30 bottom, 6 I use a 40, 8 I use a 50, 10 I use a 60, 12 I use an 80. So to keep that tension consistent at ultra low tunings, I’ll need 14-90, 16-100, 18-110, 20-120, 22-130, 24-140 and so on. Considering how this quickly becomes a problem if I want to keep my favored tension and the fact that I would rather use an .80 in Drop C than a .46 in Drop F, am I shit out of luck in sticking with 6 strings?

5yabout 5 years ago

30 to 40 inch scale 6 string guitar

Yeah I’m looking for 30+ thanks anyways. And the quest for the brown note must continue, but on a honest note I’m probably max gonna go to Triple Drop C. There’s no reason to go lower as that is the lowest pitch percivable by humans, unless you want to gradually make every note unhearable till you get to 24th Fret highest string in that case you would need something ridiculous like Quadruple to Septuple Drop E.

Ultra-Heavy Gauge 6-string strings

Hello fellow users of heavy guage strings. I use very heavy low strings with very light high strings. 10-60 in E standard. 12-80 in up to Drop C# but usually in drop A or B. I’m looking to get a new guitar (a baritone 6 ) and start tuning between Drop E and Triple Drop E. To keep the same tension I’ll need thicknesses somewhere between 18-110 guage and 40-200 guage. Do any brands make packs like that even custom for six string? I’m asking cause Stringjoy my usual string company only goes up to somewhere between 90 and 110 guage. Thanks in advance- Juniper!!
