"Live I play Rickenbacker guitars through Marshall 100 watt amps. I love Ricks because they are so percussive and sharp in tone. It can sound like a washboard, it can sound like a piercing treble laser or it can just sound Byrdsy and 60’s chiming. It also allows me to cut through Ian’s sound which is much thicker, fuller and heavy. He and Joe function like a wall of rhythm and I kind of slice in and out. In the studio I’ve started using a Fender Twin Reverb. Also every now and then I’ll try an effect box, like an MXR distortion or a wah-wah."

Dirk used a Höfner 176 Galaxie Deluxe throughout the early years of Tocotronic.

In John Fogerty’s interview with Vintage Guitar Magazine, he mentioned that he recorded his self-titled 1975 solo album and his unreleased 1976 album “Hoodoo” with a newer 1974 Gibson Les Paul in tobacco Sunburst(as he retired both of his original CCR 1968 Les Paul Custom Black Beauties after the bands breakup) and a Sunburst 1973 Fender Telecaster(that he picked up for his 1973 first solo album “The Blue Ridge Rangers” and it can be seen on the unreleased 1976 “Hoodoo” album cover photo).

The board is wired with an Evidence Audio SIS patch cable kit.
