The Hello-Thread: Please Allow Me To Introduce Myself 👋

Well, I live Nigeria ...

welcome! it occurs to me that perhaps this isn't the best place to find live band members locally, however, it's an excellent place to form an internet-based recording project.

GEAR:
  • Roland Juno-6
  • Gibson SG Standard
  • Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp

Yeah, it's quite hard to find fellow band members from m region online.

I have not really given internet-based recording projects a thought though. Maybe I should

What about out finding fellow musicians out in the streets? Is there a music scene in your part of Nigeria?

GEAR:

  • Roland SH-101
  • Roland TR-909 Rhythm Composer

Yeah, I do know a lot of musicians.

The thing is, live music over here is mostly done in churches so most of the musicians I know are church musicians who are often not willing to try out other genres. (I'm also a church musician 😅)

I'm still searching though, hopefully I'll find a few who share same interests with me.

Welcome!! I also started by playing in church and met a lot of my best musical friends there, I'm sure you'll find people out there if you keep at it.

GEAR:
  • Fender Jason Isbell Custom Telecaster
  • Rivera Chubster 40
  • Nobels ODR-1 Overdrive (1990s)

Thanks, I'll definitely keep at it.

I'll also trying doing some solo stuff and putting it out there to see if it catches anyone's attention

Churches still train & educate more musicians here in the United States than universities do. I'm not a religious person, but I'd never turn down a chance to see one of the great gospel or pentecostal church bands here in Los Angeles do their thing on Sunday. Churches are one of the few places in this country where you can still find live musicians playing complex jazz-influenced music... AND everyone is up on their feet dancing and enjoying themselves, instead of sitting in their seat stroking their chin.

I'm curious to know what kind of music you play at your church? Is it similar to our urban gospel here in the states?

If you ever find a free moment, link us to a YouTube video of the kind of music you play at church. There are lots of people reading this thread who are just as curious as I am... people who are lurking, just like you were, lol.

Sometimes its similar, we often do covers of the gospel songs played over there but we do it in our own style.

I don't have a video of me playing sadly .. But here is one from a church nearby : https://youtu.be/YCTL8Xy--Zk?t=284

It's very groovy music, Let me know what you think 😅

I had a great temp gig in my 20s doing FOH and recording audio for the video records of a gospel megachurch in a repurposed move theater... I was so sad when they got a permanent church member with my skill set because I was dancing with them and even jammed with some of the guys after services, and they were hella cool to me despite being an atheist white-boy... especially once they knew I played

that's always been a solution, I've joined bands with street musicians and people I met at clubs

it was a hard job because I had to record time code start and stop synced to the cameras and it was midi in the DAW and then I had to turn up to convert to smpte, video was pretty analog then

This is even better than I expected. I've been listening for several minutes now, no plans to stop -- it's wonderful.

A Makossa Praise can happen spontaneously like our Praise Breaks here in the states, right?

Do they always last so long?!? I don't think I've ever seen a praise break go longer than 10 or 12 minutes here.

GEAR:

We don't have much of spontaneous praise breaks.

There is a section of the service dedicated for Praise, and yes they normally last that long. There could also be a praise section when it's time to collect offerings, so folks would dance and then drop their offerings in a basket at the front and then go back to their seats.

In response to Jim's comment mentioning Talking Heads, are you a Fela Kuti fan by any chance being from Nigeria?

Fela rules! discovered him through his association with ginger baker. Dude was so popular he ran for office... shame how it ended. He was kinda Sun Ra too in a way.

I find it interesting that you guys know of Fela. I didn't realize his music had that kind of reach.

I'm not really a fan of his, though.
