Your favorite music-related movies?

What are your favorite music-related movies? I'm talking comedies/dramas/documentaries (NOT concert films unless it's an absolute classic that transcends its genre).

I'll start:

School of Rock (2003) - One of my favorite movies, makes me smile each time I watch it. The kids in School of Rock are endearing, funny, not to mention very talented (in real life as well). I'm not a huge Jack Black fan, but this is easily one of my favorite performances from him. I love how he teaches and motivates the kids how to perform a rock show using examples from all the greats, and how he imparts to them to use music as an outlet/escape from whatever is troubling them :)

Whiplash (2014) - If you haven't seen this, stop what you're doing and watch it. I think it captures and articulates so well what it takes to be the best at something and realize one's potential (that scene where he meets his girlfriend at the diner... wow. <-- DON'T watch the clip if you don't want a spoiler!!). Brilliant performances all around.

Sound City (2013) - Having a lazy moment so here's the copy paste summary: "A documentary on the fabled recording studio that was located in Van Nuys, California." (Dave Grohl is the central figure in this film)

It Might Get Loud(2008) - Another one I could watch over and over again. Sort of a gear-centric documentary, it cuts back and forth between U2's the Edge, Jimmy Page, and Jack White, as they talk about what the electric guitar means to them and what they look for in it.

Amy (2015) - I didn't know much about Amy Winehouse aside from what was made popular through the media, and now I think that's a shame after watching this bio/documentary.

8 Mile (2002) - Not sure how accurately this reflects Eminem's real story, but I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, it's another good one about perseverance when the odds are stacked against you. I have a lot of respect for Eminem so maybe I'm a bit biased with this pick :)

What other music-related movies should I be queuing up??

Four Minutes (2006) – Kind of a Whiplash predecessor but for grown ups? The Chorus (2004) – Sweet story. Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001) – I usually don't like musical movies, but this one is tremendous.

The Pianist. This is why I love classical music today.

It's actually a bit hard for me to differentiate between my favorite music-related movies and my favorite movie-related soundtracks. I'll try to mix it up a little.

  • The Broken Circle Breakdown: A really heartbreaking Belgian drama film from 2012, which is full of americana and bluegrass music. All of the performances in the film are sung by the actors themselves. If i had feeling I really would have cried the whole screen time, but thankfully I've got none because I'm a real man with a big penis. Seriously: This film will bring you tears. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raaHRyBtIEo

  • A Love Song for Bobby Long: Laid-back 2004 movie with an awesome soundtrack and Scarlett Johansson. Even John Travolta is pretty likable in this one, and yeah, he's dancing and even singing old folk tunes. One of my favorite movies, because of it's cool New Orleans atmosphere. Most of the soundtrack was composed and sung by Grayson Capps, the son of the author, Ronald Everett Capps, who wrote novel on which this film based on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGbM0sFwsUQ

  • Nearly all the movies in which T Bone Burnett was involved in. No matter if it's Inside Llewyn Davis, Crazy Heart, Walk the Line or O Brother, Where Art Thou?, I love all those folk, americana and country based soundtracks and those films weren't disappointing as well. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t-vC6DZJmlw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y0349E7kFEM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eXqlIlkCmDY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1C2gCXo4Gs

  • Mistaken for Strangers: On of the best band documentaries I've ever seen – if not the best. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUrBDEdeInw

  • Searching for Sugar Man: Okay, then this one must be the second best music doc. This is really a must-see. Really, watch that one! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tDw7OqVBT-w

I could go on, but this post is already full of links.

It was boring to me. I got about 40 minutes in and switched it off. I don't even remember much. Something about Motown... yada yada.

Motown and the muscle shoals sound are only related in that they were 'race music' in the parlance of the day... Stax is more related to the muscle shoals sound popularized by Jerry Wexler and to a lesser exent Ahmet Ertegun (the MAN who signed zep etc)
