INA GRM Tools 3

soundonsound.com

INA GRM Tools 3 offers a unique and innovative suite of sound design plug-ins that push creative boundaries. The standout Evolution Bundle introduces exciting new effects that are both complex and user-friendly, adding fresh dimensions to any sound designer's toolkit. The plug-ins are visually appealing with resizeable interfaces, though some older effects feel dated compared to modern alternatives. While not every parameter syncs to tempo and stability issues may arise, the overall package remains compelling for those seeking ethereal and unconventional audio transformations. Long-time fans will appreciate the updates, while newcomers will find inspiration in its distinctive sound-mangling capabilities.

two words....

two words... comb filter! If you get nothing else with GRM tools then the awesome stereo comb filter plugin just makes it. I cannot begin to describe how much I love this set of plugins.... the pitch delay was way ahead of its time. Its just pure gold. I keep using them and using them for anything and everything. This is the greatest source of unique textures in the whole VST universe. I can't give a more detailed review, it would get too long. Just get GRM Tools and get creative!

“That was a combination of using noise reduction and EQ,” Tobin explains. “Some noise-reduction plug-ins [such as Sonic Foundry's DirectX, which has a Keep Residual feature] allow you to look at the dirt you're taking off a track; I just took that garbled noise from the drum track and ran it through the GRM Tools EQ plug-in, which seems to add a harmonic content when you adjust the different faders. I was left with this really metallic, liquid-y plastic type of sound; I mixed that with the original drum sound and balanced it out so that the drums have this strange sheen to them.”

"I don't have many plug-ins in my new system, because I've only just migrated to it, but one that I use a lot is Altiverb, which is an amazing-sounding convolution reverb. Another great plug-in is the TC Master X5, which is fantastic for doing things for film and TV, because it makes everything sound huge, and TV and film people love things to sound huge. Also, [Camel Audio's] Supercamel Phat is a lovely compressor/EQ/band-pass filter plug-in that is cheap and sounds great on everything, especially bass and kick drums. I love the GRM Tools band-pass filter, and the Camel complements it nicely."

FJO: How many different programs are you using to make this all happen simultaneously? I see you have Max/MSP open.

IM: For the music, this is all Max/MSP; the controller is Max/MSP and Jitter. And this is another effect. And I use GRM [plug-ins], and in that way I relate to physical musicians, but otherwise I’m not really physical at all. For the visuals, it’s a whole bunch of things made using FinalCut and then Flash to put together the animation.
