how different is the minitaur from a Model D or a Phatty? I understand its got what's supposedly a Taurus saw oscillator, which should make it quite a bit different from the other stuff I have... but I'm just curious. Being a module its not like I can try it out in a store with any ease....

sounds about average for a finished vocal mix when soloed... you would eb surprised how much treatment is on even stuff like Nirvana.... I think Kurt really disliked ALbini's mixes of in utero because the vocals were originally pretty dry, uncompressed and lowish in the mix even by 90s standards... he got used to the butch vig processed vocal after nevermind

right, so if you set the agenda you'll be happy? you know what, you win dude... I am sure I cannot possibly cast any doubt on anything you can say, man

I'll see if I have time for some sophistry before bed.... how long's your film?

here's some similar single-serving stuff on the science and history side of things:

https://youtu.be/Gfd4kFPWjzU

https://youtu.be/jipEUPCai90

I'm sure I could dig up some more if I had time, but I don't.... and lts face it, movies ain't books https://youtu.be/B1uc7ohS7cU

I hope nobody notices I just went youtube diving on company time :-(

also, the title of your film is a take off on Richard Dawkin's extremely famous best-seller "The God Delusion" which is not really a particularly great book or anything, but this film is pretty much like Julius Caesar writing "Anti-Cato" to show up Cicero...

no, I am working, its not even lunch here... I had time after work yesterday but I guess you were asleep so I made some turkey corn chowder and got off the internet -- you really don't want to do this anyway, you're just going to get mad at me

but I am planning to be home all day tomorrow and if I get enough work done between now and tomorrow morning I will mostly be kicking my feet up, so if you want to chase our tails in your chatroom tomorrow night (for you) then I can do it starting around 7pmish your time which will be 9 or 10am here I think

I think I was 14ish for blind mellon, the video brings back a lot of memories of the era because of its icnic image.... kinda like November rain, teen spirit etc where the song has been overshadowed by my nostalgia and I can abrely hum it anymore but I recall the silly mtv spots like it was yesterday!

for me my #1 nostalgia album is Depeche mode's violator as it came out right when I was getting more into buying records, got a tape boom box and I think my 1st sony discman around this time abandoning my 45 collection and baby record player nd it was also the 1st electronic record that didn't sound wimpy to me (though there was stuff out there, not a lot of 10 year olds knew about skinny puppy)... it had been out for awhile when I bought it the 1st time (I have owned more copies of this album than anything else save Ziggy stardust)... every time I listen to it (which is a lot lately) it takes me back to some great times I ahd all through the 90s 'finding myself' as a teen and young adult! Yet as nostalgic as it makes me feel it still sounds fresh and interesting to me even though I know every note by heart.... I can't say that of other albums I bought around the same time like Metallica's Black Album or Use Your Illusion 1&2 that sound hopelessly out of step with what came before and after. This was a little before Nevermind and like that record it got me really interested in SONGWRITING over just bashing all the time....

here it is, listen to its glory... the intro to world in me eyes gets me every time.... so cool

https://youtu.be/kJQ9KoxS40g?list=PLPwPdfsfcDCWasKgwEQ6vj6_p9aFdrfar

this is album to me is OF its time but not defined by it and it takes me back while carrying me forward whenever I listen to it

that's what I'm sayin' -- I'm seriously middle-aged even compared to you and I lead an exhausting life, I smoke, eat lots of rich food and sometimes I drink too much (maybe sometimes is putting it gently), but I don't find myself wanting to complain about exhaustion unless I'm also feeling depressed (and I have a lot to feel down about) and even then finding more to do and shaking the clouds off is usually the answer to that. Honestly there is just nothing better than pushing yourself so hard that you pass out the minute your head hits the pillow! When you feel you are completely out of energy and the to-do list doesn't look any shorter that's when you add a few more items and really start crackin'....

I was just reading and nearly decided to get Ron Zacapa 23 Solera.

You know... Cuban cigars are not illegal anymore I'm fixin' to go get that Bodegas sherry if the local store has it. I've been craving beef all day too. I think I'm going to grab some ribs or my new favorite cut, the, "Poor Man's Fillet" otherwise known as the Southwest Griller. I found one the other day for cheap and brought it home. I really enjoy this cut. It puffs up 3 times it's size in the broiler.

they

legal cubans are still unavailable in Philly... not that that has ever stopped me! but anyway! fire up the grill (or broiler), grab some flat iron cut on the cheap and have apersonal man-feast! sherry guitars/basses cigars and a meal make DUDETIME

and I am smoking a smuggled Havana el president

but you may want to purchase soething from the Dominican republic.... your goal is to nurse 1 glass of sherry or brandy while dipping the mouth end of the cigar into it so you suck alchohol in while inhaling fine cigar with potent nicotine and fine flavors likelether and sandalwood that accent the beverage you are drinking... I don't know ho exas is for the good life but where I live I can literally walkto a smoke shop that smuggfles Cubans and get myself whatever I desire.... the same owner runs a lovely liquor store

EDIT: by the way I am 'working' now charging billables, I arrived home from a tense fiduciary meeting and decided I needed some wine and cigar to relax and be effective in AP concerns under the tight constraints presented earlier... there's no such thing as a diatonic chord, a chord is 3 notes or more, but any chord can be divided into diatonics across polyphonous isntruments, on 3 note chords (triads) you can duplicate the root across both sounds but on more complex harmonies one can divide them 2 notes ata time like a hooligan and also add additional melodic touches inbetween changes

this is way more intricate than you thought it was, but someone is ging to tell you about it and it might as well be me

take your time, be patient and let the rt of it overtake you

I made this in fl studio but also use protools for mostly live performances without midi sequences... I have also donesimilar stuff in Cubase, sonar,logic... atever works over the years! I am almost 40 so I have been around my young padawan

Equipment I Once Had

seems crazy but people may want to know how I do what I do in a corner of my son's playroom.... maybe you have a point!

9yover 9 years ago

Why does my mix sound unprofessional?

now on arrangement I am going to use one of my more developed pieces that's all MIDI to illustrate a number of prnciples not because I am the best at anything but because I am intimately familiar with every nuance of its musical underpinnings

now, the 'verse A' section is just 2 chords and the 'verse b' or turnaround section is a couple more chords that introduce a key shift that's a little less modal and justs traight minor to slightly lighten the mood but not too much.... the 'chorus' section is a series of 4 chords followed by a retard utilizing a varied 2nd chord to add tension and demand a return to the initial motif (in the last key changed choruses there is NO retard because the chord sequence resolves onto itself fine for repetition).... note that I establish the groove without drums relying on bass and that the bass sound has no volume dynamics but the dynamics are expressed through changes in note texture and decay even when playing the same note repeatedly, this was achieved by creating a sequence with varying note velocity and then programming bass sounds (there are 3 or 4 layers of bass) that respond to those velocity changes by changing their oscillator shaped, filter cutoff, resonance and other synthesizer parameters based on the velocity nd aftertouch, how hard the note is truck and how abruptly or gently its released... though I quantized the aprt to get tight with the core drum loop, kick and snare programming I DID PLAY IT initially and then set that data as a master sequence for multiple channels of MIDI send info to hardware as well as 1 or 2 virtual synths all carefully programmed to work together and then run thru a songle mixer track to meld them with sympathetic mixdown processing.... you will also note that a strong theme is the DX7 part played thru a guitar amp that is cotantly playing chord arpeggiations at the top of each change even in the chorus, this is the glue, but in the breakdowns you will notice I use other isntruments to answer these arpeggiations either identically or as slight variations to develop that theme and add interest and depth.... also note how I am not slavishly devoted to playing the whole chord on one instrument all the way thru and that instruments that stay consistent might only be responsible for a diatonic portion of each chrd in some sections while other isntruments pick up other elements of the chords.... note the piano's slow 'counter bassline'.... then also note the respone melodies on various synths that contain the same notes as well as occasional diatonic harmonies on sympathetic sounds , that part begins with a soft but percussive key sound but in other parts is represented by sustained sounds that have a slightly horn like or organ-like quality and that's where multing theisntruments pops in because I intiially played the diatonics on 1 instrument but later play it across 2, 1 part per soundthan.... then there's the high whine from the alpha juno following the secondary and teriary notes in the chord with some passing tones but always monophonic..... the glissando effect gives a little more looseness to a song that's very mechanically programmed and was a alte addition designed to reduce stiffness -- also note how all these aprts sit in very different piano registers so with very little mix effort they separated cleanly other than doubled parts and close diatonic harmonies that were meant to gel thru a phenomenon known as frequency masking....

get any of this?

I didn't even finish this mix, its mostly levels, a smidge of subtractive EQ to clear the mids and move sounds back a bit, some boosting EQ on some percussion to brighten it and a little reverb and early reflection on individual FX sends as well as timed echoes on busses to vary how the reverb sits against the drum groove. I can make it sound a lot better than this but I need to get to the vocal part first so I'm mixing 'big picture' -- no buss compression or sidechaining or other endgame techniques to embiggen it, which is why I chose to us this as an example as it sounds quite decent with minimal mixing! the arrangement helpsit shine in a half-finished form despite its utter musical simplicity... really listen to it while considering my comments on WHY I did what I did and HOW! because also in the background of my mind was to mask intent and make it music that just happens to you in an inexplicable way and if people's feedback is any yardstick to emasure my success at that I nailed it with this ne ebcauxe no one has the faintest idea whats really happening or that any planning went into making it happen and they just enjoy the ride and get transported to an imaginary environment of my choosing

I gotta get dressed fo work and hit it.... when you get home download synth1 and tyrell, they are freeware and sound quite good and are VERY complex synths that can be used to inject a lot of variety and dynamics into boring parts when you get your head around the finer points of sequencing and figure out how to exploit the features of these virtual synths

they will help you add more textural variation and interest to individual parts if you spend some time reading some of the beginner articles I posted.... this will take you awhile to digest and apply, don't rush

I didn't listen to the youtube video.... I posted some beginners articles for you now that I am home that may help you give your arrangement/sequences a shot in the arm when you wrap your head around them and I also hooked you up with a versatile, freeware instrument to work with learning to make different sections of a sound responsive to note velocity data from the piano roll (synth1 sounds decent, is a low CPU hit and the filter and amplifier are both responsive to velocity in a 100% tweakable way via knobs and buttons)

get to work, stop rushing and have more fun
