Why does my mix sound unprofessional?

I didn't say a word about effects.... where did I say effects? anyway, its your song, I can't write the drum part for you.... unless you pay me LOL, but I don't know what's right for it off the top of my head w/o working on the bassline too and then that's just my point of view..... there are probably a dozen ways to go, its just that what you have SO FAR is not one of them, though it may be a window into a potentially pleasing rhythm if you THINK HARDER ABOUT IT and try maybe dancing to it a bit

you will know when its right because you won't want to ask anyone's opinion anymore

I gotta jet.... I'll be available after I drop Lu at preschool

strucutre's a bit better.... drum groove leaves much to be desired, might be the wrong tempo overall for this song but at the least, tone down the number of rolls outside of transitions and try to inject some more 'swing' into the drum pattern, its stiff.... all the 'one line' tonal parts play the same melody as the vocal, try a diatonic harmony in addition to a double and consider COUTNER MELODY as well as maybe doing something with call and answer, having a similarly phrased diatonic harmony to the melody play a few beats back in the form of a cannon or rondo at times, maybe the end of each phrase.... try varying the melody or change the chords around it while leaving the melody notes the same (reharmonizing for beginners, try swapping all chords to their relative majors or minors, then try adding a dominant 7 to a few)

... no discernable bass groove, but I didn't have it cranked up.... try locking the kick and bass together on all of the bass' accent notes

my mind really wandered after the first 2 minutes and Iw as like thinking about getting more coffee and maybe buying Danish later and not listening carefully anymore... so I am going to brush my teeth and wake my son

you, on the other hand, should mute everything but the bass and drums and really lock them so they work together as the spine of the song and also have some real feeling, then make sure the piano chords support the groove and don't just drone alone.... look at your VELOCITY levels for every note/chord, the dynamics are so steady its putting me to sleep... even if you compress it all while mixing down later to even the levels out those changes in velocity will still be perceived in the finished version, especially if you spend some time programming your synthesizers to have more than just volume sensitive to velocity and aftertouch.... try filter cutoff as the most obvious velocity sensitive parameter, but you could do all sorts of stuff depending what kidna modulation options your software provides. READ THE MANUALS if you are confused

but yeah, mute everything, work on the rhythm section.... you probably don't drum or play the bass,so this will eb the thing you really wanna labor over until you can kick out grooves without thinking.... they can be stiff and mechanical, Kraftwerkian, but if you do that you need to syncopate more like on trans-Europe express and numbers

Why does my mix sound unprofessional?

its not done.... it takes way more than 2 days to write and arrange a song unless you are really inspired and the song is really simple and elegant with very little instrumentation

but link

I am not too busy.... it Monday here and I have to take my son to school in a bit and then go to the office for an meeting with my boss and opposite number in AR to look at our upcoming check schedule... but none of that is a big deal time wise

nothin' worse than missing the train or bus to work/school... you know what else sucks? when the train is overcrowded and they make you wait for the enxt one 20 minutes later and it'll make you late, but if you get back in your car and get back on the highway you will probably be 30 minutes late and that's when you can find a free parking space!

instead of WORKING on it, try THINKING about it and sitting on your hands for 24 hours, then resume work with lots of really developed ideas of where to take it

also, that flutey part really sounds weird to me against the vocal, the cadence or something.... have a listen for yourself...

its not very funky, the whole song, is it? like the syncopation is not really happenin' even though its at a dancey tempo.... speaking of which, do you ever go out dancing ? I don't anymore (well, once in a blue), but I used to (from raves to goth clubs, mambo to salsa -- even took swing lessons with someone I dated beore Iw as married) and it was very good for my rhythm, the visual aspect of me playing in a band on stage and it was a generally good time...

sometimes when I am working on the overall 'pulse' of a song that's sequenced I will blast it loud and proud in one room and then go around the corner to another room and listen to it that way like through the walls of a nightclub (it doesn't have to be dance music, just anything over 100 BM that needs a strong drum and bass groove) and if its not making me move my feet a little I will rethink the drum and bass parts, mostly the cadences, not usually note selection

BUT ANYWAY, you might want to move some asses if you really wanna save some souls... Gospel Music has the right idea.... you wanna hear some booty shakin' music that's all about Christianity check out the EARLY Staples Singers.... super religious, super-badass.... listen to the groove -- I am convinced that if there's a good he wants to hear more music written for him like that and less hymns and such that are just too gloomy

Equipment I Once Had

Yes indeed. I believe every Jim owned guitar should appear on Jim's page.

whoa.... when you throw in amps, pedals, microphones, rack gear and synthesizers its going to get really messy.... if you wanted me to list all the software on my music PC? jeez.... I currently just list stuff I use all the time in software and stuff I currently own in instruments and gear, I have plugins on my harddrive all installed nd ready to go that I just haven't had cause to try out yet! The average stuff I generally use is workin' fine so there must be like 50 plugins pay and free that I haven't ever opened in a DAW

its only maybe 30 seconds of music, but if you really elaborate on that some more and maybe write a release in the form of a bride or middle 8 or something you will have an okay song in the modern conception of that term

getting better, keep at it.... just keep dong it, it'll get easier

There aren't really any shortcuts in the arts unless you are a savant sort of genius though it help s to start very young...

My phone is receiving EB emails, but I am busy spending quality family time with my son and my mom today, no music. Shopping for cookie cutters, party paraphenial and ornaments and deciding who will cook/bake what for Lucian's birthday celebration in 2 weeks and the impending holiday festivities at the end of the year. I also owe my mother-in-law a visit or long phone session at some point. Tonight before bed or tomorrow I will check it out, okay?

Feedback please! Infographic on studio headphones & monitors

I personally am a Yamaha and Tannoy guy... I kidna like the expensive Adam stuff and I usually like dynaudio drivers and the few studios I've used the dynaudio powered nearfields in were pretty easy to mix in, though I found dynaudio's speakers to have some funkiness in the lows that threw me at first

9yover 9 years ago

Feedback please! Infographic on studio headphones & monitors

(KRK are a notoriously bass thick monitor more suited to electronica, where guitar work lends more to something much flatter.

oddly enough I like to mix even house music on 'flatter' monitors with unhyped bass, which is maybe why I am always saying I don't like KRKs.... I just like monitors that are honest sounding and if I need to target the extreme lows I can hook up a sub for an hour of detail work down there or just look at it on a scope and get an idea if my sub frequencies are eating up too much bandwidth (when I hook up the sub doing techno-ish stuff I often get excited by the thump and get carried away hyping the bass instead of taming it LOL

nice flat speakers with fantastic midrange imaging like anything Yamaha has made since the 80s are just the best way to go particularly when you are learning... they won't flatter your mix and you will be trying hard to get it to sound good on them so that when you flip the mix to other setups it will sound fantastic... minor problems in the mids will jump out like crazy and you will be forced to correct them and again that will make the mix sound that much better on more flattering playback setups

okay jim, stop internetting and start your day, dude

great thoughts there as always, T

dn't frget low efficiency speakers, I love non-ported 3 ways powered with lots of clean amp juice.... they can be your flattest option with great abss response that's not hyped at any particular frequency range thus reducing the need for room treatment

the flow chart's not bad though, good ideas, but I wouldn't even b proposing a speakerless setup as an option.... #1 should be to get speakers regardless of your situation, once you have those more professional cans become something to consider and you can start deciding if you need to tolerate closed backs or you can get away with the acoustically more accurate open back designs

also, headphones are terrible for your hearing even at low levels.... spending lots of time with little speakers next to or worse still IN your ears is way more damaging than playing some 8" monitors loudly all the time. Its even worse than playing in a rock band without ear protection, believe it or not. You are destroying your top end hearing with cans.

I think the flow chart should make mention of potential eharing loss caused by prolonged use of headphones. Kids need to be aware that this is another reason why most pro studio guys avoid headphones whenever possible. Prolonged mixing on cans will tire your ears for sure nand you will change your mix to ease your ear fatigue without realizing you are doing so. Loud speaker monitoring can be fatiguing, but it takes a lot longer to set in if you are properly removed from the speakers and they are spaced well ;-) and with speakers you can leave your mix playing and back up, leave the room with the door open etc to get another sense of how it sounds AND to rest the old eardrums

ugh, I gotta stop puttering on the internet today.... I am supposed to be accomplishing some stuff today and instead I got sucked back into EB chat world.... this site is addictive

there are 3 people talking to me a lot via gmail and music we're working on together is setup in google drive... but I've had conversations outside of EB with a lot of folks from the site over the course of the last year.... synths running thru guitar effects and/or amplifiers are the bomb

oh, and apologie to the OP, I thought I tried the disaster transport, err, I mean the dispatch master but I am pretty sure after Whorse's post that I had it mixed up with the avalanche run... these crazy names, man, they all sound the same... like I was thinking dispatch master, typed disaster transport and argh! at least with boss the names were just like Boss Reverb or Boss Digitl Delay.... the effects weren't as cool but they were usually easy to keeps traight in your head other than silliness like the gonkulator and slow gear

I don't know a lot about underground hip-hop even though I have worked on a lot of it as an engineer and programmer over the years to pay the bills... I certainly approached it from a non-DJ angle that is probably way different than the guys these small tie MCs were used to working with, but they were always happy with the finishes records, moreso than what they were doing at home with a cheap drum machine, DJ rig, cans and 4 track... but on your stuff, I like your textures, but if you gave me stems to mix my mix would sound a lot different without compromising the core sounds.... my use of the dynamic range and bandwidth would be geared around filling a room in a non-fatiguing way, even at low levels... I'm not sure I could do my kidna mix on cans alone, you're making me want to try now.... the last time I did though it was a disaster to my ears. I didn't get what I thought I had when I played the mix on speakers or even thru different sets of headphones.... it was very listenable I guess, but it wasn't what I was trying to do and that pissed me off

thre are no rules, but you should have the tools to do it the "right" way so its a choice not to.... so when making a buying guide I would always favor speakers as a 'must-have' and good headphones as a 'maybe'... and then depending on what you are doing ith them there are lots of options... for doing whacky heafphone mix effects I like my open-back AKGs because they are speaker like in their bass and low mid response or sometimes cheap earbuds that came with my iPad, lol whereas for overdubbing I want isolation and like big overear DJ cans (I'm an audio technical guy usually but have used the smaller and lighter sonyy cans too over the years where a little spill is not big deal) even though the suck a rat for anything but listening to already-mastered music

the truth is if you have the ears and artistic sense you can do this with whatever's at your disposal but if you are a beginner starting out the right way will help you train those ears to do it all wrong later

Why does my mix sound unprofessional?

the king james bible was compiled with political intent, not that the greek version it drew on is any better, it just had different politicsin mind, think contantine not a stuart monarch

and am not worried, I haven't debated outside a court room for awhile butI have had soe succesfulcourt experiences on the stand professionally andpersonally where I whooped on lawyers who weren't ready for me

I am not the stereotypical wanker guitarist.... I play a bunch of ibstruments but I am capable of many other things and I am thrilled to be granted an opportunity to demonstrate it to someone... the ability to do music is a cognitive ability and if those of us with it so choose we can do virtually anything, the human mind is a beautiful thing

9yover 9 years ago

Why does my mix sound unprofessional?

I'll do your channel Monday at a time of your choosing assuming its not a time when America is asleep. you are on, understand my goal is not disrespect but when a challenge like this Is thrown down I have to debate with all my rhetorica skill and historical/archeological knowledge if Iam to maintain any self-respect,,,, nothingpersonal, I am just playingdevil's advocate against you because you have told me I will fail in that role and I woulddo so regardless of blief because I love a challenge

I also insist that the bible cannot be used as a source of historical documention unless a particular passage is backed by another confirmed source (this excludes passages inserted into Josephus by medieval monks that aren't even in the same latin as the original passages actually penned by Josephus and Vatican fabricatins like Pilate's letter to Tiberius after the crucifixion which is universally condemned as a dark age forgery)

Why does my mix sound unprofessional?

Edit: Alright, I'm up for the challenge...I'm ready for the insult. If you want me to debate, let's do it. I have God on my side 😄

If you are ready then, We'll start on Monday...or else come to my IRC channel on freenode ##Godhelps we'll have some fun

god won't help you but if you want a conflict I will provide one Monday and Lincoln/Douglas your ass into the pavement pre-law bachelor's style... I ave lenty of facts, but its not even essential to have facts to win this kinda thing, all you need is forensics skill and experience and I was not removed from debating in highschool and made a judge for no reason... the Pennsylvania school system deemed me too effective and cut me because of my skill and mad me a judge... bring it my friend, bring it, I hate argument but love a structured debate

to defeat your position all I have to do is cast doubt on every one of your assertions, a counter ropositions isn't even required and if you throw the gauntlet I accept it, intellectual to intellectual as an exercise of friendly wits.... no hard feelings though

dude, take it down about 40 notches

seriously or I am going to embarrass you publicly. You do not want to debate me, particularly on topics pertaining to archeology, classical history, philosophy etc. I am not some uneducated dope.

hey, I designed it though...just wanted to show you. I can't help with that though, I love to preach where ever I am. It gives me happiness and joy 😄 don't be offended....I preach to people who I like usually and I know...But I consider preaching gospel is the greatest help I can ever do to a person, so I'm telling you out of gratitude and love...😄

seen it, heard it, I m old and experienced , bud, cut it out... if all of us non believers felt compelled to preach, not just Richard dawkins LOL, can you imagine the ideological chaos and conflict? if we keep our beliefs in our homes we can avoid a lot of civil strife and get on as jesus would want us to whether you believe he was just some jew or the son of god
