What would you call that genre? Post Grunge?
sure, that or maybe neo-glam/proto-punk? depends on the track? we had a style we liked to call "rock n roll jukebox", though not as much diversity made the album as I woulda liked

What were your bands called?
MY BANDS I WAS IN?
the only one that met with any success (and that being strictly regional) was Under Your Bed... and I am still bitter we missed our shot due to legal problems, but these things happen... I probably should have hung in there because things worked out for our local contemporaries, Haelstorm, but we really weren't getting along anymore as opposed to Lizzy and Co who managed to stay a family even while their album was shelved. Coulda woulda shoulda., right? Here ya go, this is most of our record.... I think there's 1 track missing that I don't particularly like how it turned out and there's a single version of 'no compromise' that I probably should upload because its got a different feel....
there was also brick window, zeitmahl (I just played bass for my friend in that one), space charge (also bass, oddly enough)..... god I forget them all now, dude I am losing it... countless highschool bands that never recorded anything....

Yeah but Aflec was the BOMB in Phantoms!
now you're taking me back! that's an old one

that's actually a really cool story.... you need an 'about' tab next to 'forum' where you share that story in detail instead of it being a 'buried forum thread'. I think people would like to hear that and it would be good PR.

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!
Damn, son, sorry, I'm distracted.
But yes, I'm joking. Unfortunately, I've only met one real female guitarist, but she only has under half a year of practise and ONLY PLAYS CHURCH MUSIC
she'll come to her senses... god expects you to play for free
Also, never met a true "gamer girl" in real life. I envy you. Everyone around me is too generic...
don't... my ex is nuts, literally.... so moody that at her worst she can be like 2 (or 3 or 4) distinct people
but she definitely loves playstation and is very good at her favorite games (the nerdier the better... like the final fantasy series) to the point where 'gamer' is an appropriate title
EDIT:
you seemed somewhat serious
I get this a lot. Please excuse me.
no prob, sorry for hard timing you, the internet's confusing anyway... I thought you were being humorously serious because in the guitar world we certainly have a dearth of women due to the boys club nature.... and particularly in electric guitar world because of the whole techy, gear head culture...
my ex-wife tends to overplay her ideas about the sexist social programming girls receive when they are young, but I will say that young ladies are definitely not encouraged to take an interest in electronics the way boys are.... having a very young son of my own and having baby sat 2 of my uncle's 4 little girls when they were my son's age, I have come to the conclusion that this is simply because most boys take an interest in mechanical stuff at a very early age without encouragement while most little girls instantly display that nesting instinct women are stereotyped as having. Kids seem to be programmed that way, but its not an early indicator or anything, its just what they do before they are old enough to think for themselves. However it doesn't seem fair not to engage girls with this sort of stuff in school. My Jr High made everyone take shop as well as home-ec and I think that was a really good thing. All of us learned to weld as well as cook. I am good at and enjoy both activities and I still know some ladies who do too, so the world needs to get with the program if only so heterosexual male guitarists can date fellow guitarists whoa re really engaged with the guitar culture instead of bouncing between groupie types!
okay, I am getting off my soapbox

Complaints, Concerns, Errors, Suggestions, and Ideas!
Very funny, Boom. Next thing you know, you;ll be saying that girls can be female AND play videogames for fun.
We men know such women are myths
boom didn't post that, I did.... you've never met my ex-wife.... she likes videogames way more than I do.... and more than holding down a job, cleaning up after herself or taking care of our son
she also followed comicbooks way further into adulthood than I did
trust me, she's female.... I have biblical knowledge of that
the singer from my best band? female, plays a fender mustang and a guild jumbo (a nice old one) as well as being an accomplished piano player.... she's not great on guitar, but I'll bet she's as good as you and if she weren't 1 inch over being a legal midget she would be a lot better, she ahs physical limitations related to tiny hands.... she too loves video games, especially old school NES games
dare I go on?
stop being a sexist
unless you were joking, but you seemed somewhat serious

I need that bass sound from Iggy Azaleas Song fancy
You see, back then I also didn't agree with you (fully). The basic shape and all is pretty simple (fast attack and decay on the filter with some resonance), but there's a certain quality about it that stands out. The same with thew preset so you can't really say it's the processing. It has a certain ''thickness'' or you could just say it sounds Phat. I should really revisit that preset now that I know more about how Harmor works. It seemed to use some sort of weird waveform for a source, have to check it out.
yeah, its like a fucked up saw, not precisely a saw.... or its sampled from hardware in such a way that there's a tone of aliasing screwing up the waveform and bringing out artificial harmonics.... could be lots of things making it sound 'phat' and complex....
I'll bet the guy who created the track for this girl doesn't even know how he got that sound precisely. I'm sure he could recreate it if he needed to now, but he probably stumbled on whatever magic quality you guys are hearing.... personally that bass stab didn't do a lot for me sonically. That video of the guy who did it in massive sounds right to me. I'll bet my ensoniq could do it, the 3 weird ass wavetable DCOs can get pretty wild if you do like 2 saws and then something more digital.... but that synth is buried in a closet right now because I am not feeling very electronic lately.

I'm eyeing Native Instruments Guitar Rig 5 Pro. I need to do a thorough comparison between that and other guitar amp simulator software out there before I pull the trigger.
I just noticed this.... Guitar Rig is the ONLY computer based simulaton short of the amps in the UAD1 I can stand, though your converters will determine the fidelity and it will never be perfect because your pickup is 'seeing' a perfect virtual 1megohm load instead of the variable load presented when you plug directly into a good tube amp.... with great converters a really great simulation will sound like you are running a buffer all the time, which is fine for most people though personally it bugs me when I am just trying to have a dry track because it keeps me from 'playing' the virtual amp like I would a real amp.... its more of a feel thing though and I'm not sure more casual electric guitar players will notice
in short, if you don't have a great tube amp or two? buy guitar rig for x-mas
10yover 10 years ago
what about a giant Frankenstein lever? speaking of killswitches, I had an idea years ago to disconnect all the volume controls on my amps and replace them with mute buttons so no one could ask me to turn down, but then I thought better of modding vintage amps like that, even for the purposes of humor!

Mastering EQing and compressions on FLS
either way I think he should try to learn what compression does before trying to utilise it. :)
yeah that, but its a hands on affair, reading is good, doing helps it all make sense and it doesn't suck to get pointers from guys who have been doing it a long time... I didn't really understand compression until I worked as an assistant in college

Mastering EQing and compressions on FLS
I can't get into the TDR plugins, I just don't like them for some reason... also, the way I do parallel (the Andy Wallace method) requires echo sends/returns because I like to set up 3 different compressors with EQ in front of them for low, middle and high and, well you get the idea
I've read about issues with linear phase EQ, but I don't hear any of them, the trickery sounds good to me for certain applications, gentle mix bus sweetening is one of them, but ymmv... I almost never do anything drastic with EQ of any kind though... if something needs a lot of EQ to find a good place in your mix then it might just be the wrong sound for the part and if you need a ton of mix bus EQ then you might just want to go back and start the mix over....

Quick Question On Acoustic Strap Buttons
I was thinking about it, then realised there's a battery compartment right there on #3.
find out exactly how many pieces the neck is and locate the seems if its multiple pieces and pick a spot where the screw won't touch them

Quick Question On Acoustic Strap Buttons
No way.
Jim, most bands nowadays are playing standing up, and anyways, I'm really used to it. Though I suppose most older guys aren't. Hell, my guitar teacher has this specialised stool thing he uses to teach acoustic, but even he stands and walks around with his twangy Luna.
well, they've been playing acoustic standing up since before my time, but it always looked very Bob Dylan (in a bad way) to me, there's just something wrong with it (although I am always intrigued when Robert Deleo has them bring out that acoustic on a stand so he can do some standup strumming when needed without taking his bass off)... its okay when Willie Nelson does it because he's the man, otherwise the whole thing just comes off wrong, but to each his own! I don't like it when electric bands mix in acoustic live at all, even if there's some acoustic hiding in the album tracks.... just rock it out guys
To everyone that suggested a luthier, how much would you predict a strap button installation is?
Also, I'd rather just learn now. We all learn from trial and error, and the local luthier is in fact the easy way out (unless you're refretting, fuck that in particular).
it will cost less than a new guitar... its great to learn by doing but not on your only guitar.... if you don't have a spare acoustic then I would have a pro do it because you do not want to fuck up the neck joint! odds are you will pick a good spot and do a fine job, but if you don't? Yu have yourself talked into this project pretty well, so if you must DIY the thing, please consider positions 4 and 5, take a careful look at how the neck is constructed and double check the neck specs on Yamaha's website before drilling any holes... if you expected to replace this guitar in the future then maybe you should just go with that #3 spot on the shoulder, but that spot will work free eventually, I promise. The heel is better as long as you know if there are seems and where they are.

Quick Question On Acoustic Strap Buttons
3 is the safest bet. I would just take it to a luthier though and maybe look over his shoulder while he does it.
the screws always work themselves loose over time though and I would no want a gaping hole in the shoulder of my acoustic... speaking of holes in acoustic guitars, doesn't willy nelson have a creative solution for putting a strap on his nylon stringed martin?

Quick Question On Acoustic Strap Buttons
Either way, I always stand when I play live, so I kind of need to know those measurements.
are you in a talking heads tribute band that only covers psycho killer? I dunno, lots of jazzers play electric sitting down and no one can say they don't wanna be there because I can speak from experience in saying that you really have to want to be there to play live jazz as there's just no money in it and there is rarely an audience by my standards. I seriously don't think I have ever stood up with an acoustic guitar. It just lends itself to sitting on a stool. Of course, if you are planning to grow your hair out and wear a silk scarf then the fan blowing your hair and your scarf just doesn't work the same when you sit down for an acoustic number, so if that's your plan then I get it!

Help identifying this guitar? (Duncan Lloyd of Maximo Park)
There was an aria version built in the same factory. It's production (same headstock / body shape etc) moved over to Korea after the Westone versions production ceased. The quality differs (as always) with the two versions.
Definitely the Westone version. Duncan Lloyd the guitarist pictured has two of them!
there's a washburn branded one too that's from the same era as my matsumoko-built Falcon.... some time in the 80s the washburn version also went to Korea and got a more Gibsony headstock..... my Yamaha SA1000 is a mid70s matsumoko 335 copy.... main differences are the heel, neck profile, headstock shape and pickups.... the Matsumoko 335 clones are a bit different in vibe than the Fuji-Gen ones, hard to describe, I have no particular preference, both are serviceable versions of my all time favorite guitar design.... If you look at Duncan's westone it has the same oversized bridge and slender, devil horns as my Yamaha (as opposed to Gibson 'mickey mouse ear' horns)
Matsumoko were notorious for rebranding a lot of the guitar models they built under contract with crazy company names like Westone.... they did it with the Greco Barney Kessel copy too, I have seen like 3 different brandnames on these nice BK clones from the 70s that look IDENTICAL to the Greco ones but sell for less for whatever reason

Quick Question On Acoustic Strap Buttons
seriously though, do you have some pressing engagement that involves playing acoustic standing up in front of a band?

Quick Question On Acoustic Strap Buttons
OK, but I said positions 3 and 5. I'll keep that in mind though, thank you.
don't do 3 unless you know your axe has really well done sides.... that leaves 5 which is kinda my grudging recommendation anyway because the strap stays put best there... be careful not to wreck your guitar.... drilling holes in acoustic guitars often ends in tears

Quick Question On Acoustic Strap Buttons
Install strap button on my acoustic.
well obviously, I was asking for more info about the make and model, but if you wanna be sarcastic, I will give you a blanket answer: use a lot of caution with most of those positions depending on how well made you think the guitar is.... and some will work better than others depending on the heels size and shape, etc.... my experience with that 2nd strap button is that it only works well on guitars with that pointy, boat keel sort of heel shape with the button installed on the treble side so the strap's at a sort of angle that keeps it from falling off (stewmac's position 5), stay away from position 1 and 2, grilling through binding or the abck of your acoustic right around that neck joint is a foolish move.... anyway, playing an acoustic standing up is also foolish because its only cool for Nancy Wilson, and then mostly because I wouldn't get as clear a view of her legs if she was sitting down
come to think of it, I just looked and my acoustic does not have a 2nd strap button either.... I have owned it since 1997 or 98? never noticed until you brought this up! that's how often I need to play standing up.... NEVER
don't drill holes in a functioning acoustic, just play your acoustic sitting down, playing acoustic standing up a crime perpetrated by horrible people like the singer from coldplay or at best joni Mitchell... if you must drill holes in it, stick with drilling holes in the heel where there's a lot of wood and keep the screw as shallow as possible so it doesn't get near any glue joints

Mastering EQing and compressions on FLS
there are no absolute "best settings", what you're asking is how to mix your track.. there are whole books written on this, whole careers built on it.. don't take it as some light 'final step' to your production, it's a whole new skill. look up pensado's place, read some sound on sound articles about the fundamentals of mixing, you might find some good advice there.
yeah, but there's stuff that just will NOT work if you are trying to do everything in that Fruity Loops environment..... for instance I am a big fan of parallel compression, but its a mess to do it in FL the way I do it with hardware.
I am just going to focus on the OP's actual question with my own SOP for exporting annoying techno tracks from fruity loops for direct upload as mp3s to the interwebs (YMMV):
When trying to make Fruity Loops tracks loud to be uploaded to a site like soundcloud I am a big fan of slapping some RMS compression across the mix bus with a midrange focused sidechain to get things louder without letting the bass and treble transients dominate what the compressor sees, from there I might add some linear phase EQ to tailor the bass and treb frequencies a bit before reaching for the brickwall limiter to even out the biggest transients. Be gentle with that limiter, it was ruin your track if you get excited about how loud and powerful its all becoming....
if you get a good balance of compression, master EQ and brickwall limiting your track should sound good enough for mp3 (which already sounds so bad that I don't know why anyone worries about soundquality anymore)
Or you can call my friend Jeff at Peerless Mastering and ask him to do it the right way for you. He's very affordable.... haha

I need that bass sound from Iggy Azaleas Song fancy
eh, most of you guys are newbies, when I started there weren't even software synths yet.... at all... it was all cakewalk and hardware
then there was rebirth and fruityloops, the 1st made it so you didn't need to own an 808 and 303 and the 2nd replaced your expensive sampler AND could act as a step sequencer for your actual synths (and could also make it so you don't need an 808 etc if you could get quality samples), guess which one I bought? I remember when ableton came out, I think it was maybe '02 NAMM in Anaheim.... at that time ableton was the software that looked like a toy, just an update of the popular Acid looping software.... times change
anyway, there's only one Iggy I know and that's Pop.... if an Iggy starts singing without the Stooges then you can just turn that shit off!
I talked to Stereo16 about this same pesky saw sound a while ago and concluded its nothing special.... really nothing special.... most of what's jumping out at you guys is how its processed in the mix, otherwise its a software preset (probably the analog bass preset in FL's Harmor) or a sample of a shitty groovebox sound.... nothing special
I think I tried to make this sound with a subtractive synth and some effects after talking to Stereo16 and then I got carried away and made a cooler bass stab instead, then I forgot all about it 'til I saw this
anyway guys, make your own sounds, that's this chick's sound, not yours (and really I think it started as that analog bass preset in Harmor so its not even hers)... you don't "need" this sound, you need to think for yourselves for fuck's sake

I used to watch the first 3 once every week or so as a 4 year old. I always liked Empire more. AT-ATs, Luke gets hurt, and Cloud City... DONE
I never liked Jedi. The ewoks did nothing for me as a kid.
I knew you would get it! Empire is the best film if only for the 3 reasons you mentioned, but there was so much more making it good.... it also had the "I love you, I know" exchange between Han and Leia.
Jedi was the 1st movie I saw in the theater as a very little kid (even before Disney films).... as an adult its a weak film, but as a 4 year old it blew my mind, especially when the emperor got making with the lightning hands, I just didn't see that coming. Seems obvious now, evil old wizard? Lightning hands, right? but back then? whoa.... and the ewoks, though the weak link of the film for an adult, to a toddler were a nice antidote to all the creepo aliens at Jaba's palace.
Empire is still my favorite... maybe because my mom went to see it when she was 8 or 9 months pregnant with me. Or maybe because its the best film of the franchise.... either way.

I usually use Alpha push pull pots, give Bourns ago too. Thinking doing two CTS and Two push pulls so I can spilt and phase. Also going get a gold switch craft toggle from america as in england no one seems to stock the gold or black ones which sucks
I literally mean PUSH PUSH pots, they are like a latching footswitch and make a nice healthy click when engaged, no pulling at all (that's what breaks them, people get al excited pulling on the push pulls like a... well)

Anyone eyeing anything for Christmas? I'm planning on getting a Deluxe Big Muff, some ToneRider Rock Song Alnico 2 humbucker and some CTS 500k pots etc to wire them into my Les Paul as I broke one of the pots and warranty won't cover it. I usually prefer CTS to alpha pots, but the Alpha push-push pots are great. Look them up.
