Best studio investment you ever made... for LESS than $100?

I'm withdrawing my original answer. For under 100 bucks I'm saying a tackle box full of 1% metal film resistors and panasonic polyester caps with a few components each of every common audio circuit value. You can really solve a lot if problems with a well organized box of resistors and caps.

What's your current favorite source for purchasing such components at these quantities?

Best studio investment you ever made... for LESS than $100?

Oh? I didn't mention this was a contest?

Well it is now, and you won.

Whoa there... if we're throwing guitar gear in here everyone will be changing their answers.

I never forbade guitar gear... I even mentioned strings as an example. I suppose "best GEAR investment" would have been a better topic title. My apologies.

Equipboard Improvement Ideas

The gear add system used to be similar to what you just described, but it was recently re-designed to only permit adding items that fit the criteria you mentioned.

The tiny manual-add option was put there for the moderators and admins to use as-needed, but after some community feedback, the system was changed again to open that link up to anyone that had reached 500 GearIQ.

So that manual-add option is kind of a bonus for your 500 points of hard work, not an either/or, at least not at the moment. If item has a link that fits the criteria of option #1, users need to use that option, even if they have access to the manual override.

The gear-add system was changed due to the large number of redundant and overly-specific items being added -- it had been discovered that these pages were contributing to a major drag on Equipboard's visibility within major search engines.

Hopefully the system will continue to evolve as the search engine stuff is sorted out, but this is what we have to work with for the time being.

Best studio investment you ever made... for LESS than $100?

I built my own "fx loop" pedal for on-board fx that "bleed" and need to go through the front of the amp versus the fx loop (EX. ring mod for certain songs). Cost me $9 in total parts and I use it regularly. Has a "blend" knob and everything.

$9? And you designed and built it yourself? You win.

Oh? I didn't mention this was a contest?

Well it is now, and you won.

How about you delight us with some pics of this frugal invention?

I entered the wrong instrument

After you make a submission, you have 1 hour to make any changes to it, then the item you chose is written in stone... and there is no way for end users, nor moderators, to remove submissions at this time.

2 options:

  1. Do nothing and leave it be.

  2. If you choose, I can rate the submission as "completely incorrect" which will filter that submission out of everyone's default view for that Artist's page. But this is 100% your call.

Equipboard Improvement Ideas

I have a red "1" by my notifications and no unread notifications. It's been that way for a few days now. Even just a simple "mark as read" function would be nice.

This happens to me every now and then, it eventually goes away. it's definitely a bug, not intended functionality. As soon as you click on the notification, the red-bubble numbers usually USUALLY go away as intended.

Warm wa-47jr in black is going for $199

I really think anyone in need of a multi pattern jack of all trades condenser should buy a pair of black 47jrs from sweetwater by x-mas before the price doubles again. At this price, even if you only use them occassionally they will still pay for themselves in a few recordings.

Coming from someone with your depth of studio experience, this is a hell of an endorsement.

However, it looks like the sales have ended. I'm seeing the black 47jr listed at $299 at Sweetwater... now it's the silver/nickle one is on sale, listing for $249.

Joyo Classic Wah I, Classic Wah II, or Classic Wah Volume Pedal? They are/were all available in more or less the same black housing, so tough to tell them apart visually.

@pkennethk I'm still unable to add gear myself. May you add this one [https://pasteboard.co/ilokWjCFfAPj.png] and that one [https://www.myrareguitars.com/guitar-pictures/vintage-eko-12-string-electric-guitar-violin.jpg] please? They are VOX Continental Organ Mk I volume pedal and EKO 12-String Violin-Shaped (or just Violin) Electric Guitar respectively.

Hey Kowalski, no worries. Only 184 points to go!

Per this site, do you mind if we name it:

Vox Continental Volume Pedal (1964-1966) ?

Vox never gave this pedal an explicit name and there was a style that preceded this one, so I'm not sure where that "MK1" came from.

For the Eko, I'm seeing some sources refer to this as an Eko 12-String DLX, and others refer to it as an Eko 395 XII or Eko X395 XII we're going to need some more research to figure out what Eko's official name was for this violin-shaped 12 string model.

Unknown Japanese greenburst guitar made in the 1960s. Possibly Kawai brand or St George.

Used by Justin Trosper of Unwound but can't add the guitar to his list of gear

Photo of guitar

That's not how this works, unfortunately. Can't add it until you've positively ID'd it.

I'd recommend starting a thread in the General or Guitar section of these forums and see if anyone has any leads on what make/model it might be.

UPDATE: what are the odds it's a St. George MP-4 with a missing pickup?

Can you please add a Vox guitar/keyboard 1960's volume pedal?

https://reverb.com/item/47498567-vintage-1967-vox-italy-electric-guitar-organ-instrument-volume-pedal

Doing some quick research, looks like Vox offered a few different volume pedals in the 60's.

How about naming it "Vox Volume Pedal (1966-1968)"?

Warm wa-47jr in black is going for $199

So, being a comparative mic novice, here's my question: if you'd used actual Neumann U 47 FETs on this specific project, do you think the end result, after mixing and mastering, would be objectively superior?

Great writeup by the way, you spoil us.

What if I want to add a custom bass?

Hey Breeze!

The P Bass you want to add is for your own Equipboard, not an Artist submission, correct?

If so, users have 2 options:

  1. Use a P Bass entry that's already in the database, then upload a Gear Photo of your customization to your profile. You can tag the photo with the bass entry to link the two, and your customization will effectively get top-billing in your profile.

  2. Build your GearIQ up to 500, then you'll get access to a manual override for item submissions that will allow you to add without limitations.

In general, it's better for the health of the gear database if the item entries are more generalized, because it's more helpful for people to see that both Tim Henson and John Petrucci have played a Music Man JP6 than it is to have a separate entry for every possible color, year, and fretboard config of the Music Man JP6... but when it comes to your own gear, everyone understands that folks want to show off the hard work they've put into mods and upgrades.

Also, I was rocking your Soundcloud while I replied, some great tracks there. I wish wish I had the chops you've developed. Especially on Swallow and The Eagle Will Land.

Hi,

I would like to submit two items I own.

The first one is the Eko Camaro VR 2-90 Blue Sparkle. You can find it here : https://reverb.com/item/42786880-eko-guitars-camaro-vr-2-90-blue-sparkle, but apparently this link is not correctly formated...

The second one is not avaible on the imposed websites. It's a kit for a DIY pedal called The Lineal, you can find it here : https://www.musikding.de/The-Lineal-Booster-kit

Thank you, Rémi

https://equipboard.com/items/eko-camaro-vr-2-90

https://equipboard.com/items/musikding-the-lineal

The Camaro link is correctly formatted, of course -- it's just that the system only accepts Reverb links for products that are popular/common enough to have a dedicated landing page on Reverb, aka a "/p/" page. Reverb links that go directly to an individual item for sale won't work, because those could be any crazy product name, spelling, or photo the seller of that listing felt like using.

I hear the very polite protest in your phrasing, and I understand that these Add Gear restrictions can be annoying. Thanks for your patience. The good news is that once you cross 500 GearIQ, you'll be able to add items without any restrictions. You're more than half way there already.

@andyborek I'm always happy to meet someone who knows how to PD :)

Your setup sounds amazing, too. I've got a lot of admiration for anyone with the vision to know exactly how they want everything in their studio to interact, and the talent to actually make that setup a reality.

Knowing now that you're using pretty much everything CopperLan has to offer an end user, I agree with your original proposal for a single CopperLan entry for all of it, using the company logo.

https://equipboard.com/items/klavis-technologies-copperlan

Any time you can take to fill in further details in this entry is much appreciated. Edit any aspect you feel like.

Thank you!

@andyborek Given that CopperLan is a framework, more than it is a standalone product, I'll need some more insight from you.

I've been to the Copperlan website and educated myself on the differences between CopperLan, the CopperLan Manager app, and the CopperPlug wrapper... but can you perhaps tell us a bit more about which parts of this offering you personally use? I want to make sure we categorize and describe this thing correctly, and thus far I don't feel like sticking their logo.png in the root of the "Music Software" category is really doing this framework justice. The explanation copy you provided is great, thank you, but it doesn't quite give me the contextual foundation I'm after.

Any further insights on which parts of this system you're actually using in your studio would be helpful.

Yea, an original, but the 12 string version.

This would fit perfectly. https://www.fetishguitars.com/2014/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/rokesdearmondnero-1-1030x773.jpg

And that one would be better (the pickup color matching the one I'm going to submit), but the resolution obviously sucks. https://www.fetishguitars.com/2014/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/DSC05699.jpg

Don't worry about matching the exact look of the guitar you're submitting exactly, if we're just talking about year-to-year cosmetic differences on the same model. Prioritize whatever seems best for the next 20 people that need to use this entry, rather than just what's best for this one submission.
