Best studio investment you ever made... for LESS than $100?

For me it’s shure sm57. That microphone sounds fantastic. Nowadays I use it all the time, even as a vocal mic

That's an investment that will last you your whole life, too. I've come across some very road-worn 57s beat to hell, with the finish half-gone, but they always keep working.

Yes, there are not entirely the same, not to mention that even the casting is different, the switch featured on the album cover, source image, is quite blurry. Though I'm inclined to think that one has serifs to the letters.

If this were a matter of trying to determine which revision of a tone-shaping pedal we were looking at, something that processed a signal, it would be an entirely different matter... but in the case of a switch, something that just clicks a circuit on/off remotely, regardless of what version or who made it, the result will be the same: either it works or it doesn't. So in this case, one generalized entry to cover all switches based on a certain brand's style. If we were talking about different clones of a Klon Centaur, for example, I wouldn't dare lump them into one entry.

Hi Kowalski, the system won't let you add this because it's not an item that is plentiful enough in the wild to have a dedicated landing page on Reverb (something we call a "/p/ page" here). Once you're over 500 gear IQ points (which happens faster than you'd think), you'll get access to a manual-override where you can put in more obscure, out-of-production items, and/or items that are only sold direct by the maker.

As for this Vox 3-button switch, it looks like there are a few different versions of this cast-iron switch, some originals, some reproductions, and at least two different wiring schemes for different models of Vox amp. I've generalized the entry as much as possible in hopes that this will cover every version of this style of pedal. I took the name from this old piece of Vox product literature.

Good catch. It's just a bug of some sort. Thankfully, this doesn't seem like something that is significantly impeding anyone's navigation of Equipboard, but you're right that it should be investigated.

It's not a bug. That's just the way items without shopping links are formatted. Your feedback is appreciated, however. Personally, I also miss that orange hyperlink on those pages.

Ha! I'm glad someone knew what was up. Thanks!

Ok. Sorry, my English is not the best.

Your English is 1000 times better than my German. No need to apologize. :)

I’ll try again to describe my problem but first please look at my 2nd request:

Please remove lowres pictures. I added highres at: equipboard.com/items/musikding-tube-screamer-ts808-ts9-clone/item_images

Done.

Now my actual problem.

Normally there is a mouse over link in the item description you can click on to open the related manufacture’s page.

In my case:

equipboard.com/items/aion-refractor-professional-overdrive#revisions-form

equipboard.com/items/aion-compressor-effects-pedal

There should be a link to manufacture Aion (Aion should be orange with an active link)

So I request to check an error at items above because Aion actually is already linked in item’s description but - there is no active link to manufacture.

There are various items with this strange error but I don’t get why.

Good catch. It's just a bug of some sort. Thankfully, this doesn't seem like something that is significantly impeding anyone's navigation of Equipboard, but you're right that it should be investigated. Given this is a thread about requesting items to be added, and not reporting bugs, would you mind re-posting these steps to find the bug as a new post in the General section? I recommend using the word "bug" or "potential bug" in the post's title. I suspect it will be more visible to the Admins that way. Thank you!

Best studio investment you ever made... for LESS than $100?

OK, I've been thinking about this one for a few days.

If I'm looking at the little things that made a huge difference, that have lasted years, that I would re-buy without hesitation:

  1. ANYTHING that enables ideal speaker height. 20 years ago, it was 2 cinder blocks, a 2" thick plank of pine some guy at Home Depot cut for me, and 2 repurposed mousepads used to get my (g)early-departed Event PS6 monitors to proper ear-height. Then I was using rack cases to right-height things. Now it's these stands from IsoAcoustics, that list for wayyy too much, but were scored for about $100 on an open-box deal from Reverb. I was constantly fussing with speaker placement until I got these. Putting my tweeters at roughly ear-height always makes a night-and-day difference for me. Not angling them up to my ears, I've tried to get away with that, but placing whatever cone makes the highs right at ear hight... that's my happy place.

  2. This bag of colored patch cables from Amazon. Link I'm a recovering cable snob who once soldered an entire studio's worth of cables from high-end Belden cable stock, Neutrik connectors, and industrial-grade solder so toxic I nearly passed out a few times. All cables are filters. There ARE slight sonic differences between cables. These cables from Amazon are damn-well good enough for my needs. They're well-made, sound just fine, and having the different colors is great. I paid $65 for the bag of 6 a few years ago. Looks like this assortment is currently out of stock, but I'm sure someone on Amazon has cables of similar quality for a similar price. If you've got a box full of random different patch cables, of different ages, qualities, sizes, etc, that you've amassed over the years, a few bags of these are a great replacement IMHO.

  3. This solid AF desktop mic stand that can hold an SM7B firmly in place without an adaptor from now until the sun swallows the earth Amazon It streets for a shade over $100, but I negotiated a local seller down to $100 +tax. My review

  4. Update! One of those tiny MIDI controllers you can fit in a backpack Link Admittedly, I think I paid $130 USD when this thing first came out, but you can now find them used and open-box for $100 or less. I've been really happy with the quality, feel, and software support of this Arturia model, but I'm sure the similar offerings from Akai and Novation are decent choices too. What I like is being able to have my main work area as uncluttered as possible, and just grab this thing (one-handed) and plunk it onto my desk when I need some control. If I had a big keyboard directly in front of me, I'd just want to noodle all day and I'd get less done. I've fit this little Arturia into a standard-size backpack so many times... it's come in far more handy than I ever thought it would.

Dear Mods

Request to check an error at following iteam - there is no active link to manufactor (Aion is not linked) but in item details Aion is related to item as manufactor.

Thank you for replying and great questions!

The Artist is both the “standard” model in this series as well as the name of the series overall. This link shows the different models:

http://www.edroman.com/guitars/hamer/Hamer%20Models/hamerartist.htm

The Vanguard was the cheapest model in the series, which explains the finishes. It also has a 59/JB set instead of Seth Lovers, which is what the Artist is normally associated with. We can also update the current model page instead of adding a new guitar. The Artist is considered the standard and most well-known of this line of Hamers.

A better picture:

https://images.reverb.com/image/upload/s--wWLSwlNc--/a_exif,c_limit,e_unsharp_mask:80,f_auto,fl_progressive,g_south,h_1600,q_80,w_1600/v1518618798/rmqyui31qr5uv1xxitzm.jpg

Woh... stunning Hamer!

Heck of a knowledge-bomb to boot, @cleanlespaulverb, much appreciated. :)

Now, if we were dealing with pretty much any other manufacturer, I'd omit the "Sunburst" from the item name, but still post the sunburst pic, because that's the one you own and are presumably hoping to see... but I'm getting the sense that Hamer, in their bizarre and unfortunate naming schemes from this era, actually made each different finish a different model name and put the name of the finish in the model name and SKU#?

Now, even if this IS the case, and I'm understanding correctly, for the sake of simplicity, could we get away with NOT following this naming scheme and just adding this as "Hamer Artist", but using the sunburst pic, and hope everyone with a different color Artist just uses that entry going forward?

I think you're now the official Hamer SME here, so your input is crucial.

The image you provided isn't working for me, and I'm having a hard time finding any conclusive info on differences between the Artist and Artist Vanguard Guitars. Or even what the official factory name of any of the sunburst Artist guitars was. I'm seeing things like this that treat them as interchangeable names.

Are you able to tell us any of the differences between the Artist and the Artist Vanguard, spec-wise?

The all-red LA 85-KK already has an entry here:

Any additional info you can spare on this one?

Why Can't I add items without a link?

No, not excactly.

At aion you can buy:

  1. a single PCB to build a diy pedal
  2. a full Pedal Kit with PCB and all electronic parts

There a several pedals available in both options

are you sure?

Either way, the 2 main options for each pedal are as you just described: PCB Only and full Kits, not pre-assembled pedals.

4yover 4 years ago

Why Can't I add items without a link?

In terms of the Aion pedals (and other) there should be to different options. One for the normal factory pedal and one for the PCB or Kit because these two versions are absolutely different.

So there a several Aion PCB out there but only a couple of them are also sold as manufactured pedal.

I'm seeing 3 options according to Google and their own website:

  • 1. PCB Only
  • 2. Full Kit
  • 3. Limited run pre-assembled Kits

Am I understanding this correctly?

If you want to treat the limited run pre-assembed offerings and the kits as the same product, so that there are just 2 item entries for the Helios, that's fine, but here are the manufacturer's supplied official photos for those 2 offerings:

https://imgur.com/B8SIrg6

If you post your custom image as the item photo for an "AionFX Helios PCB" entry, and then someone comes along and replaces that photo with the actual picture of the PCB... then what? What do you propose should happen when someone does that?

4yover 4 years ago

Why Can't I add items without a link?

Does any mod please give me a small feedback, please?

You and I had a conversation about this exact topic last month, in the comments section of one of your duplicate pedal submissions. I gave you a statement on how I feel these matters should be handled for now. You acknowledged you understood the compromise I proposed, but were not going to abide by it, because what was best for you was your top priority, what is best for everyone else is not. I thanked you for at least hearing me out.

Now, what has happened with this Aion pedal is exactly what I proposed: that we should use the manufacturer's supplied image for every DIY pedal kit in which such an image is available.

And now, you're here asking for moderator statement... but you already had one.

You were proceeding as if our conversation didn't happen, so I proceeded for a few days as if this post didn't happen. I think that's fair.

Re: having separate entries for the PCB and full-kit versions of the same pedal, I don't think this is really the issue. I think you're just trying to re-frame the discussion in hopes of getting a different answer. If Equipboard had a feature that allowed you to display images of your (admittedly great) customized pedals in-place of the generalized images everyone else saw on their Equipboard, you wouldn't be here trying to make a case for having separate entries for the PCB-only and full-kit versions of this pedal. If memory serves, weren't these the duplicates you were requesting to merge in your request? Two entries for the same pedal, one that used your image and one that used the full kit image?

Anyway, as I stated in our earlier discussion, I think the feature idea you had is a great one: let users display a custom image of exactly what their version of the product looks like, when that product entry is viewed from that user's Equipboard. This would cut down on people adding entries for different colors of every guitar, speaker, MIDI controller, etc, and encourage everyone to be as invested in how their Equipboard appears as you are.

In the interim, you've got the gear photos section of your own Equipboard to display all your custom pedal work. When you tag those photos as being of a specific pedal kit, then your custom photo will display, alongside the generalized one, when anyone views the entry for that kit. I know this isn't exactly what you want, but it's what we have to work with right now.

It’s just if anyone is looking to really make a move on an SP1200 & don’t need the “Grail Edition” SP, definitely check out Isla Instruments offering

My thoughts exactly. If your aim is to actually make beats, and not just hold an investment, you could get 5 Isla S2400s for that price, and the S2400 is a living, breathing thing with fresh development behind it, rave reviews from SP-experienced users and a bright future ahead.

Equipboard Improvement Ideas

It would be convenient to have a more clear and efficient way to add artists and bands to Equipboard (maybe a peer-review system like we have for verifying gear submissions). I've sent multiple requests for artists, including some whose bands are already on Equipboard, and most I've requested still haven't been added. Also, I only found out certain artists I requested were added when I saw it on the homepage for recently added artists. Maybe a notification system for artists you've requested have been added would be helpful, as well.

This reminds me, all of the artists I've tried to approve as of late have thrown back a "something went wrong" error. I'll see if the Admins know what's up. This potential bug aside, I'm with you that the artist approval system needs improvements.

Fender is buying studio gear company PreSonus

Ohhhh this is the news of the day, for sure. :)

Personally, a couple folks I used to work with have been at Presonus for at least a decade now, so I'm very happy for them. This news made my morning. To get acquired by a company with Fender's name, but without having to become part of a public company (Fender never had that IPO, mercifully), bodes well for the people at Presonus, and for the continued health of their products.

Studio One users (I know you're reading this), what are your thoughts?

oh the Dirtywave M8 is amazing and I recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat. Was a huge fan on the PO's and Polyend Tracker and the M8 really feels like the best of both worlds.

I'm so happy to hear that :) I remember Tim Lamb from back in my Reaktor-building days wayyy back in the early 00's. I'm really happy he's still at it, and making interesting stuff to boot.
