Komplete Kontrol A49 V.S. M-Audio Oxygen Pro 61?

I lament midi man's transformation into m audio. I ran my old midi man phat boy2 into the ground for 20 years man.

There aren't enough Flying Cow AD/DAs on Equipboard.

Thanks! Will do.

Some more pretty cool photos here: https://varia-instruments.com/mission/

There’s also a two-channel version named RDM20.

An appropriate name for 1/2 an RDM40. I like it when folks keep it simple. :)

If Cinthie digs the RDM40, it's probably a pretty decent piece of kit, at the very least.

They really do!

A friend of mine, whose skill, taste, and experience with guitars and recording is beyond reproach, swears by Lollar. When I asked about Strat pickups, he told me to stop wasting my time and just get the Lollar Dirty Blondes. I still haven't finished the guitar in question, but I have no doubt that he's right. He usually is.

Sequential Take 5 reaction thread

Not a fan of this new Sequential look with the grey panel and plasticky knobs that appeared with the Pro 3, but blimey does this sound good. Hope they do a version with wooden side panels.

I’ve always loved the sound and looks of the Prophets so that was kinda my knee-jerk reaction too when I first saw the Take5 announcement. Some have said it’s an odd look, a bit out of character for a Dave Smith creation, but then someone else pointed out this is Sequential’s first product under new company ownership 🤔 (And yeah, I understand these things have a long lead time in development but still maybe the new owners had some say during negotiations).

The Pro 3, which predated the acquisition, has a similar look, though a bit more upmarket. I don't think many would fight me when I say the Take 5 is meant to bring certain elements of the Prophet 5 sound down to a more attainable price point. Using plastic knobs and ditching the wooden end-caps goes a long way towards bringing down the BoM and hitting your cost targets.

It would be highly-unusual (from my own tiny window of experiences, at least) for an acquiring company to get that hands-on with a product's aesthetic specifications during the first 18 months post-acquisition, let alone during the negotiations. That said, I'm sure the fact that Sequential had a more downmarket product (by Sequential $$$ standards, at least) in the hopper, was very encouraging to every potential buyer that got to look at Sequential's books and roadmap during the sale process. The Novation influence at this stage would be more like "promise us you can deliver this new 'Prophet 5 Lite' product at a year-1 profit margin of at least x% and a MAP price of no more than $x". That's how buyers influence their new purchase during and immediately after. The "we had a Marketing meeting here at HQ, and these are the new unified aesthetics we'd like you to consider" type of stuff generally starts to happen 2-3 years post-acquisition, at a point where it would be kind of negligent to NOT consider such things.

Komplete Kontrol A49 V.S. M-Audio Oxygen Pro 61?

I've never tried Komplete control but the m-audio oxygen line has always had mediocre action and chintzy knobs/sliders. They pack a lot of features per dollar but aren't exactly high quality.

When M-Audio was owned by Avid, the Oxygen line was a lower-tier offering. Oxygen boards had a less substantial feel than the flagship Axiom line in that period. The first 2 generations of Oxygen controllers were especially insubstantial in their feel. But over time, and especially under InMusic's ownership, they've phased out the Axiom line, and the Oxygen line has moved upmarket relative to what it used to be. I don't think the current Oxygen Pros are going to match the high water mark of the much older Axiom Pros, but I'd be shocked if the current Oxygen Pro line felt dramatically less substantial than NI's A-series boards.

...but all that said, I'd also be shocked if the Oxygen Pro felt MORE substantial than the NI A-series. :D

update:

Think about what you're trying to do before settling on 2 or 3 products designed just as controllers. Sometimes your money is better spent on an actual synth, digital stage piano or workstation that can do double duty plugged into your computer.

But once you go to DIN MIDI and external synths, you've lost the convenience and simplicity of working 100% in-the-box. We don't know of OP even has an interface that can bring DIN MIDI into DAW domain... but to your point, the price of a used workstation synth with hammer action keys and the cost of a new midi controller with comparable key action isn't always that huge... and every MIDI controller, short of that Kawai beast with the wooden keys, is essentially a disposable item that will be worth exactly $0 in 10 years, whereas even the cheapest Yamaha MOTIF or Korg workstation from 2002 still has some kind of reason to live in 2022.... but OP is looking at $250-ish price range... we're not talking about best way to spend $800-$1200.

I’m not entirely sure to be honest

No worries. I did some more Googling, and Archie has done some gigs and videos with a white customized Eclipse that looks very similar, but not identical to the one in this picture. They might still be tinkering with specs.

Let's hold on entering this one until we have an official model name and model # from ESP. There's gotta be a good reason they haven't announced it yet.

Regardless, this is a great find. I had fun watching Archie demo his shredding skills.

I can't find any info online about this guitar, other than the one Facebook post from 2020. I also checked the ESP USA and ESP Japan websites.

What are the odds this is just a one-off Custom Shop creation they made for Archie, and not something that's going into production? Or a model whose rollout was postponed due to the global pandemic that broke out a few weeks after that picture was taken?

Name: Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay 4 3EQ 1995 w/ "Flea Bridge"

Image: https://i.ibb.co/N6XX4r3/Screenshot-2021-12-27-at-05-07-27-1-2.png

Couldn't find this one. It's slightly different from a "standard" StingRay.

Oh man, those mid-90s EB Stingrays are supposed to be some of the best-built Stingrays ever. Congrats!

Do you have links to any info that proves/confirms the Flea bridge was a factory option that you could be ordered straight from Ernie Ball in that time period? E.g. Is there any info online like what serial #s indicate a Flea Bridge option, etc? I'm way into Stingrays, but this is beyond my current scope of knowledge. Educate us.

If Ernie Ball ONLY offered the Flea Bridge as customer or dealer-installed add-in, I've got to consider the Flea Bridge models as modded EB SR4s and recommend they be filed under the same entry as a regular EB SR4... but if we've got proof it was a factory option, even for a limited run, and especially if it has serial # impact, we can give it its own entry.

Update: looks like 1992-1996 models were fitted with a bridge that was similar to prior years, but was offset to the right to straighten out the angle at which the strings attach to the bridge. Ernie Ball also modified the saddle grooves to be more closely aligned with string gauge, to prevent slippage during heavy-handed use. The '92 and '93 models shipped with the traditional Stingray per-string mutes as standard, and this bridge became known colloquially as the "Flea Bridge". From '93 to '96 the bridge shipped without mutes, but the mounting holes were still there, and the bridge was otherwise unchanged. The bridge that shipped without the mutes was known colloquially as the "Trans Bridge".

http://www.musicmanbass.global/bridges-pre-eb-eb/

If I'm understanding the above site correctly, what was known as the "Flea Bridge" was the factory-standard bridge for at least 2 years; it wasn't an option or a special model. Is this correct? This link is just one website, it could, like any such site, have some factual errors.

Komplete Kontrol A49 V.S. M-Audio Oxygen Pro 61?

@spender_m, 2 questions:

  1. Why not compare the A61 to the Oxygen Pro 61? Is there something about the A61 (or Oxygen Pro 49) you don't like?

  2. Do you live in a region where you'd be able to compare both models side by side in a store yourself?

I've never used either model, so I can't comment personally, but from a quality standpoint, both Native Instruments and InMusic (parent company of M-Audio, Alesis, etc) have proven capable of making best-in-class MIDI controllers in recent years... so I doubt we'll be able to rule out one or the other based purely on quality issues. Key feel is absolutely the right thing to be focused on, given your needs and the models you're looking at.

@Adam_fitzpatrick the Squier Bullet Stratocaster HSS Hardtail is already in the database:

https://equipboard.com/items/squier-bullet-hss-ht-stratocaster-by-fender

The color of the body and the hardware don't affect the sound, so adding a new entry just for the FSR color combo would be considered a duplicate item by current guidelines.

Q: What is a duplicate item?

A: A duplicate item is an item on Equipboard is any item that is not significantly different enough to warrant its own page. For example, the color of equipment and instruments does not affect sound, so if all that differs is color, please do not submit a new item, but you are welcome to specify the color of a specific item in the submission notes (in the case you are submitting the item to an artist) or your review (in the case it's an item you own and use). If you spot any duplicate items on Equipboard, please let us know here.

...but I did update the item image, given the old one had some quality issues. Happy holidays :)

Not a single one. I thought reviewing is a moderator’s privilege. Well, if I have that power too, I’ll start review the submissions I’ve seen at least. But first, I’m going to have my breakfast.

Everyone can review right away, there are no restrictions, as far as I can recall. The community reviewing each other's submissions is kind of the point... though that seems to be everyone's least-favorite point, lol. THANK YOU for being willing to do some reviewing!

P.S. What I know for sure now is that not every single submission can be marked as correct, some needs improvements. I'll try to do the best I can in improving and reviewing. Someone says it is not that easy, and that person will be right.

You're exactly right: reviewing does NOT mean marking everything Correct. Reviewing means carefully considering what the community member has submitted, and then asking questions if something seems amiss. Use the red "Completely Incorrect" ONLY when there is evidence of malicious intent to mislead or purposefully offend the community, OR if the user is specifically requests you mark it as such, so that the incorrect item will be filtered out of the Artist's profile. If you're not sure if something is malicious, use the "@(username)" notification to ask a moderator a question. We're happy to help.

None of us are an expert in every subject, try to stick to submissions in categories you really know well, or are trying to learn more about. For example, I don't know as much about guitar amps and acoustic instruments as I do other areas, so I generally leave the amps and acoustics for other community members to review.

Post your item add requests here

Well, I'll probably leave things as they are now. I personally think I've provided things I submitted with enough information I was able to find.

I see you marked only one item from the recent ones as correct. Is something wrong with the others?

I'm not an employee of Equipboard. I volunteer my time here. I review what I can, but I can't review everyone's requests on-demand by myself. I hope you understand.

I've got a question. Do you know how to use a book as a proof, sharing a link to buy a book on amazon, etc. or link to google books page, where it's partially accessible (though has what I need) or uploading a screenshot of page that contains what I need? What to do if it requires the words on the two pages to quote?

P.S. I just quoted some lines from a book and used its google books page as a source, along with images where possible (and they're stated as a source in this case while a link to the book page is in "details").

You're very thorough, Kowalski. I appreciate that. :)

Re: best approach to referencing a book, I think book title, author name, publication date, page #, and the relevant quote are sufficient. If a scan or screen cap is legally available for the passage in question, that helps too, in terms of reenforcing the validity of your claim. That said, I am in no way qualified nor authorized to issue opinions on matters concerning an author's or publisher's copyrighted material, as it pertains to this service and community. Only the Admins can comment on such things. Whatever their opinion is on this matter, it supersedes my personal opinion without question and without exception.

Thanks for helping me this time. Yes, I have finally reached it. The only thing that upsets me about the Standel amp is that it’s stated as a bass amp for some reason though it’s a guitar amp. Can we do something about it?

P.S. I’ve revised the item’s page.

No need to get upset, just fix it. You have the power :)

Sorry about that: Standel made a Super Imperial XV that was specifically for bass, but I didn't realize there was a separate "Super Imperial XV" in the same style case with vibrato and reverb channels that was specifically guitar. My mistake, thanks for correcting.

Re: Gibson L-5 acoustics on Equipboard, oh my... what a wretched mess (this is not your fault, of course). There's no need for a separate entry for every year of the L-5... but I understand your are trying to keep things consistent with how other users have been doing it. We need to get things aligned with how Reverb has categorized these instruments, so there are just 3 entries:

Gibson L-5 1922-1933

Gibson L-5 1934-1938

Gibson L-5 1939-1958

(there are CES models with pickups, Premier models with cutaways and reissues and whatnot, of course, we're just talking about the original 36 years of acoustic models that were regular edition L-5s)

(I share all this so anyone reading this thread can get a better idea of what is expected going forward)

Anyway, use this entry:

I'll circle back on that Super Imperial and your submission reviews as time allows today. Cheers!

New to Equipboard? Dazed? Confused? Start here. 😎

Not every product has a "/p/" link on Reverb, at least not yet. They only give "/p/" links to products that have attained a certain amount of sales volume on their site. If you need to add something that doesn't have a "/p/" link yet, just request it on the other thread like you've been doing.

4yover 4 years ago

New to Equipboard? Dazed? Confused? Start here. 😎

Hey I Was Trying To Submit Gear But It Keeps Saying It Isn't A Correctly Formatted Reverb Link

Reverb links must point to a product landing page, not an individual item for sale. All landing pages have a "/p/" in the link, like this:

https://reverb.com/p/teenage-engineering-op-1

These "/p/" links are curated by Reverb, so Equipboard can be sure the product names and photos are correct, and they can then pull in pricing data and other cool bits of info through Reverb's API.

Once you hit 500 GearIQ, you'll get access to a manual override option that will let you submit items that aren't supported under current restrictions. You're more than half way there already. You'll be @ 500 in no time.

For An Artist Submission Didn't Get A Nottifaction Sorry

How about I just enter this as "Kanaloa Baritone Ukulele"?

This way, as long as Kanaloa is visible on the headstock, and the relative size (+ tuning) rule out other sizes of uke, you've got a good shot at getting the submission confirmed. Then others can use this entry in similar situations.

We do this kind of thing for various Fenders and Gibsons all the time, because in a majority of cases, it's clear that the guitar is, for example, a real Fender with a Telecaster body, but which exact model it is, out of the 70+ years of Telecaster production, is often impossible to prove.

There may be a few details on Yasmin's guitar that are not on the posted menu, but you can get get one with a Florentine cut, and Yasmin's guitar is shown on the site as one of the possible outcomes... it's better for Skytop Guitar's visibility here if there's one item entry showing several associated artists, rather than one item entry per-artist.

Also: thanks for putting Yasmin Williams on my radar. Wonderful!
