Why are SSL consoles/mixers so expensive? Are the PCBs sprinkled with fairy dust?

I think this merits a blind head-to-head between the Model12 and the BigSix. Someone needs to be bold enough to do it.

I would love to do it but lack the buy in... or I'm unwilling to pay it! Which is the same thing. But the other thing to consider here is the non sweepable mids. Maybe SSL managed to squeeze that little bit extra from their 5534 opamps with a great power supply and I'm sure their 1 knob vca compressrs are a bit better... BUT is that enough additionalsound quality to remove functionality like a mic pre on every channel and sweepable mids? An e242 eq module is fully parametric! Theres nothing expensive in here, I'm telling you. The 5532 is a buck at most and that's if you buy less than 10. Is all the cost THAT Corp VCAs, p&g faders and bigger electrolytics for the PSU?

The review talks up using the Big Six for hybrid/Ootb/loopback mixing... but I would suspect the total channel count would put kind of a damper on that kind of application. What would you consider a minimum viable channel count for doing a mix on something like this?

Why are SSL consoles/mixers so expensive? Are the PCBs sprinkled with fairy dust?

This is interesting and full of solid info about opamps and even a bit on sample rates. Slightly off topic but it informs the discussion and mirrors my thoughts, particularly the bit about sighted listening:

http://nwavguy.blogspot.com/2011/08/op-amps-myths-facts.html?m=1

I think the big6 is counting on you hearing the SSL logo. It's not 2400USD better than the lowly tascam model12. They're probably more similar than they are different working on typical IC building blocks using ubiquitous 5534 and tl071 opamps (or the dual/quad versions, 5532, tl072, tl074) that have been around forever.

This blogspot link is great.

I'm currently chewing on SoundOnSound's summation:

"At the most superficial level, the BiG SiX might appear comparable to much cheaper products from other manufacturers: Tascam’s Model 12, for example, or Soundcraft’s Signature 12 MTK. But even a little investigation will show you that that’s not the case. Far from being expensive for what it offers, SSL’s big‑small mixer actually represents amazing value for money. Other products with apparently similar features are built to a price. Their technical performance is good compared to the budget gear of yesteryear, but you probably wouldn’t want to use them on a high‑stakes classical recording session; and a feature set that looks impressive on paper often turns out to be incapable of adapting to different ways of working.

What distinguishes the BiG SiX is the way that SSL’s heritage of large‑format console experience comes through in almost every aspect of its design. You’re not just getting four reasonably acceptable mic preamps that are usable at a pinch: you’re getting four state‑of‑the‑art input channels that would probably cost thousands if you bought them in rackmounting form. You’re not just getting a couple of adequate headphone amps and a volume control, but a proper master section with genuinely flexible routing and monitor control facilities. You’re getting a device that operates at ‘pro’ signal levels. You’re getting balanced insert points on both the mic channels and the master bus. You’re getting true stereo Cue sends. And, of course, there’s that preset but great‑sounding SSL EQ and compression, all of which can be switched completely out of circuit if you don’t need it. Even if you treated the BiG SiX purely as a way to get hold of four SuperAnalogue input channels, and never used the rest of its features, you’d still be getting a lot for your money. When you consider what else it offers besides, it starts to look like a real bargain."

I think this merits a blind head-to-head between the Model12 and the BigSix. Someone needs to be bold enough to do it.

Aww jeez Ken. Making the new guy work, huh? I can guess that it's a mosfet power amp with a 200v DC power rail and an AC line for the heaters of a 12ax7 just by the name. It would be a hoot if the poor sounding distortion circuit the OP mentioned utilized both stages of the tube and the clean tone was all solid state! It wouldn't surprise me. Vintage kustom gear was entirely primitive transistors and it sounds really good. Listen to some CCR like fortunate son.

I ask everyone making an add request here to flesh out the item details. I can make the time to keep up with the add requests, but me also doing the detailing of each entry ain't gonna happen.

This is a tiny hybrid amp with a great clean channel and an awful drive section :D (at least with single coils) ! It brought lots of effects (independant reverb, long and short trem, delay, boost, etc.). It got an 12xA7 tube preamp, and a Celestion GN10 speaker

Thanks !

OK, here we go:

Sounds like you know the specs of this amp pretty well. Any chance you could fill out the details section of this entry to make it a little more complete?

My smart-phone-inept-ass still can't get this to work. This stuff is why I hang back as a mod lately. It's not what I'm good at now that we changed the submission criteria and its 100% of what we get asked now... I know, its shocking how inept I am when I can read a giant console schematic but its true!

Jim, you've already served several tours of duty here doing this kind of stuff. Once you'd helped groom & recruit me, your days of really needing to sweat this stuff were over, especially with eyeseeofficial on the scene too. Once the next batch of recruits have proven themselves, my days of doing this type of daily-grind stuff will likely come to an end too. You've gotta keep shuffling the roles and duties around. If a site's moderators stay in same role too long, no matter how good or well-intentioned they are, they become a kind of toxic presence. The "gatekeeper" vibes get stronger and stronger, and it starts to become a suffocating atmosphere that turns off newcomers that want to contribute but need the breathing room to make mistakes first.

You just hanging out with us here, being your honest, opinionated, helpful self is more valuable to the community than doing this kinda daily grind stuff anyway.

EDIT: To be clear, I was in no way trying to discretely dig at anyone here re: my comments about over-tenured Mods leading to a suffocating vibe, other than maybe myself and my own observed patterns :/. But I am speaking from personal experiences building and managing communities back in the prehistoric days of the internet, when forums were more of a thing. It's just one of the general patterns that I saw play out, and apparently it happens on a larger scale too.

Opinions on Mackie Onyx mixers ?

Edit:

Any thoughts on what to name the thread?

I'm a bit of a PT Barnum when it comes to thread naming, I want butts in seats. Your good taste might steer you to something better than what I'd reach for:

"SSL Big SiX really worth it?"

"Opinions on SSL Big SiX?"

"Breaking down the SSL BiG SiX"

"Is the SSL Sound really worth it?"

etc etc

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the angle you wanna start from.

Well I don't have access to an SSL big6 service schematic so maybe more like "where's the fairy dust in an SSL?" I'm assuming their marketing literature isn't BS and that they're using the same circuits nd components made famous in the 80s and 90s... which is easy to believe knowing what's in there now.

Oh yeah. Derp. Now I get it. My kid is turning my brain to mush!

I'm by no means an expert on all things mixer but I can definitely talk shop on IC based desks on and the SSLs are even more IC based than I had realized, just a different riff on the trident 80b recipe with extra seasoning and lots of garnishes.

Can you come up with a decent picture? The reverb pics are pretty poor. The only useable shot I can find on Google links to a dead link on GC so we can't link it and I can't download it to host it on equipboard either.

Thanks!

This add request is careful, considerate, and correct. Just like all the submissions you've been making this week. THANK YOU!

I had a little moderator's conference on this one, because we generally need to steer folks towards entries that are broad enough to allow for more than 1 artist to be associated... and this would be 3 separate entries in the database that would only ever have Mike linked, and nobody else, and no users could add reviews or tag it in their gear photos, etc etc... they'd be dead-end entries. So the consensus was to just make a new entry for "Ibanez LACS RG series", have you submit that once for Mike, and hope that all users used that entry for LA Custom Shop RG guitars like this going forward.

BUT... you didn't let any grass grow under you feet while the mods talked it out, and now you're over 500 GearIQ and free to add niche/boutique items as needed. So, based on all the good work you've been putting in, I say you make the call on how to handle adding these 3. You know the consensus the mods came to, but you're free to blow us off and do what you feel is best for the community. You've earned it :)

I 9only see 3 knobs on the big6 and they don't look like dual concentric pots. SSL eq should be 4 bands with dual filters, fully parametric.

That was a rhetorical question mark. I fact-checked before I made that post. You were correct, it's definitely not sweepable.

4yover 4 years ago

Opinions on Mackie Onyx mixers ?

No sweepable mids on the BiG SiX? What?!?

If you can't sweep your mids, how do you expect to sweep me off my feet?

In a lot of ways, I feel about these 20th century big-time big-studio brands the way Chuck D. feels about Elvis.

Most of the stuff that got me excited about creating music myself were 90s electronic jams made in people's bedrooms. The fact that you could do 90% of the work at home, without having to shell out big $$$ for studio time, was the whole draw... if the results don't sound like the 19th remastering of Abbey Road, it's not the end of the world. So if these big-time big-$$$$ studio brands can make me something that truly sounds more musical than what else is out there, to the point that it saves me time and makes work easier and more enjoyable, I'm interested... but I'm with you that it needs to be measurably, demonstratively superior to the stuff costing 1/3 the price.

I'm surprised behringer hasn't used midas to tap thus market but maybe they really wouldn't sell any.

The profit margins on a $40k console are pretty great, I imagine. Putting out products that sounded like $40k, but only cost $6k might cannibalize the bottom half of their customer base... could be too tempting for small venues and small studios on the cusp to resist... but that's just a wild guess off top of my head. I have no idea, really.

I wish there was at least something on the market like SSL BiG SiX, but with modular/serviceable/mod-able channel strips. Something with the per-channel accessibility of like a Soundcraft 200B. Am I overlooking anything out there under $10k new?

If it doesn't need to be fully modular there's a 16 channel audient or maybe a 16 channel trident 68. Not fully modular designs but fully modular is expensive new....

Yikes, just looked at the prices. I'll keep dreaming of the BiG SiX for now... and just hope it's more serviceable than it looks. Nothing good could come from me having access to 500 series modules... that leads down a path I'll never recover from.

Opinions on Mackie Onyx mixers ?

I dont get where they put the inserts viz a viz the converters but everything else makes sense... i feel like if the inserts cant be post converter and pre eq I would prefer the inserts post eq but that's no longer in fashion. With a fixed bandwidth seeepable mid and fixed frequency shelving 3 band eq post eq insertsmake as much sense as anything. It's not surgical eq, it's for finesse.

Auxes with no returns do not echo sends make but that's been acosta cutting measure since always... mono you can tolerate as long as you can doa stereo return I guess. I put up with that but I also have a number of archaic mono to stereo processors I really love the sound of.

I doubt any of my gripes will bother Ajaik.

Yeah, I mean, I'm excited for Ajaik; they're gonna get to hear more than 2 pieces of gear play together at the same time for the first time ever, with eq for each channel, FX, streaming to disk, the works. Whichever of these Ajaik chooses, it's gonna be a whole new world of fun.

Now I wish they would make a giant in line version with serious routing, 4 band eq, maybe 2 inserts points on each channel, 8 busses, stereo sends and a beefed up off board rackmount PSU. I would try that out even if it lacked some character! It would kill to replace my interfaces with an all in one with all these facilities built right in. Heck, if they had a motorized fader option to interface with my daw then I would be sold even if my individual interfaces and console sounded a smidge better....

That's the dream there.... it wouldn't price out below 10 grand, somehow adding features and channels increases price exponentially rather than proportionally. But come on tascam, give me a Model 32+

Let's hope someone from TEAC corporate is reading :D

4yover 4 years ago

Opinions on Mackie Onyx mixers ?

Have either of you folks seen a block diagram in the documentation? I'm curious where the AD conversion is in relation to the dynamics and eq and also how the signal flows between those sections... is the comp post eq, pre eq or sandwiched between the filter and shelves/sweep-mid? Post eq or sandwiched would be best, pre eq and filter is a little goofy to me, that's a very unusual use case for this sort of compressor. Of course, location of inserts, filters etc can gave a lot to do with driving the next stage or send and return at an appropriate impedance without needing to add an additional opamp... still curious.

The Model 12 manual is kind of a mess, but here's SoS's routing recap:

"The eight main input channels all feature their own one‑knob compressor and an always‑on three‑band EQ section: fixed frequency bands at 80Hz and 10kHz (a little lower and, to me, more useful than the Model 24’s 12kHz) and a sweepable mid between 100Hz and 5kHz, all offering ±15dB. The frequency for the mid band on the Model 24’s stereo channels was fixed, so the Model 12 is again more versatile here.

Arguably the biggest ‘game changer’ is how you can deploy these processors. In the Model 24, the A‑D and D‑A converters were at a fixed point in the signal path, which limited how you could access the processing. For example, the compressors were always placed before the converters, which meant that you could record and mix live performances through them but couldn’t access or tweak them during playback. Similarly, the EQs always came after the converters, so you could mix through them but print the settings only in the stereo mix, not to the separate tracks in a multitrack recording. This has been ‘corrected’ in the Model 12: on each channel, you can choose via the Menu button and Multi Jog wheel to record the signal pre the compressor (ie. directly after the preamp, HPF and, on channels 1 and 2, the insert point), post the compressor but before the EQ, or post both the compressor and EQ. It’s a vast improvement, since the new routing options make possible so many different workflows.

For instance, I imagine the Model 12 will hold much greater appeal to bands and podcasters who want to stream their shows live: you can apply compression to and massage the tonal balance of each source to be used in your streaming mix, while also recording clean feeds from the mic amps, to allow you to polish the show in post‑production for a later long‑term release. You do have to commit to the 100Hz Low Cut (high‑pass) filters and the insert‑point decisions, though: the high‑pass filter being pre the converter makes sense but I’d really like to have access to anything connected to the insert points when mixing, and from my DAW via the USB audio interface.

A few other aspects of the mixer side of things are worthy of note. Both auxes can now be set as pre‑ or post‑fader, so can be equally useful for cue mixes and send effects. The auxes are both still mono, though, and there are no dedicated returns so you have to use the two stereo channels as inputs for any outboard stereo effects. The solo mode can also be set as PFL (pre‑fade listen) or SIP (solo‑in‑place)."

If you buy the onyx you're nuts. The tascam is better in every way that would matter to me. If it doesn't sound better I'm sure it won't sound worse! It's really a do all little utilitymixer, recorder and interface.

I'm sure there are some hidden gotchas with every hybrid mixer/interface we've discussed here, but at this point, we've gotta ask ourselves (non-rhetorically) what as-yet-uncovered-by-us gotchas in the Model 12 could possibly be bad enough to sway us to a different device? There are gripes to be found in user reviews of the Model 12 on amazon, GC, etc... but the pro reviews, that have the benefit of knowing what are/aren't common design necessities for this segment, all seem pretty glowing.

... this would have to be one impressive stand.

For some time Ive been looking at upgrading my main display to a much larger screen but noted that it was also much heavier than my current 27" and in the course of researching this figured out that I would need to buy a special arm if I hoped to desk mount the larger screen. Ergotron are one of the few brands that have arms that can support this kind of monitor. I think it might be the only arm that can hold the Samsung 49" Odyssey G9 curved screen which weighs in at 31lbs. The screen Im looking at is not the Samsung but a smaller lighter LG.

Impressive, indeed!

No, the real problem, as you say, is gonna be figuring out some way to mount it - maybe it could be secured (in some way) to a laptop stand attached to the arm 🤷🏾‍♂️ I can't be the first person to think of this surely. Or maybe a desktop rack is the only way to go (I was hoping to save some desk space ;-)

Rack mounting is where Mackie excels like few others:

It's the new Mackie Onyxes that I was concerned about, I can't find the USB i/o spec for the new Onyx mixers.

Oops, sorry I was juggling manuals and got mixed up.

From the product docs (not sure if this is useful): "USB Recording ... 96 kHz / 24-Bit 14×4 on Mac/PC ...

Found it on their website, the second spec in your list pertains to the Onyx12. The Onyx12 USB i/o is 14x4. Not bad.

Another plus for the Model 12: I think I prefer the inputs on the back rather than the top.

score!

Opinions on Mackie Onyx mixers ?

Another unrelated kind of question: I have one of those multiarm desk mounts, the kind of thing that can hold monitors, a laptop and a smaller device above the desk. The monitor arms have VESA mounts and I’m wondering if I could attach a VESA mount to the bottom of a mixer ? I plan to upgrade to Ergotron mounts which can hold up to 42 lbs on a single arm…

Model 12 is 9.5lbs, AR16c is 14.1lbs... neither is going to have stand mounting holes or mounting hardware on the sides or underside, from what I can tell... so with one weighing as much a Fender Jazz bass, and one weighing nearly as much as TWO Fender Stratocasters taped together, this would have to be one impressive stand.
