Anaïs Mitchell's Gear
Re-creating the vibe of the style 15 guitar of the 1940s, the all solid wood Martin 000-15 Auditorium Acoustic Guitar has the smaller auditorium body style in genuine mahogany. Dark stain and a satin finish give it a distinctive look. At around the 0:03 mark of this video you can see Anais playing this model of guitar. This is her rplacement for the ill fated Kalamazoo KG-11 she previously used. Nice choice!!
From acousticguitar.com: "1943 Martin 0-17 and a late-’30s Gibson Kalamazoo KG-11, both with K&K Pure Mini pickups through a Fire-Eye preamp. D’Addario light-gauge strings. A Shubb capo is in constant use in her songs, usually up fairly high on the neck."
This Alvarez Yairi WY-1 acoustic cutaway is one of her earlier guitars. In 2010 this video was shot on her farm where she plays this guitar. At around the 0:57 mark you can see this. :)
Kalamazoo guitars Kalamazoo is, of course, a city famous for it's guitars. It was the hometown of Gibson for most of the twentieth century, until 1984; many people would say the best Gibson guitars ever built were the Kalamazoo-built models. But Gibson also produced a US-built budget line in the 1930s, and again in the mid-late 1960s, and these guitars were branded Kalamazoo - in honour of the town in which they were produced. At the 2:30 mark of the video you can see the name "Kalamazoo" on the headstock. Sounds great! Anais is a hidden gem, love her.
UPDATE: Anais Mitchell's Kalamazoo guitar was somehow broken and now she uses a Martin
