Cross's distinctive grey bass is an Ibanez RoadStar from the early 1980s; this bass has been used on many of Ultravox's albums and was Cross' primary instrument during the first stage of the 'Return to Eden' Tour in 2009.

On the 'Return to Eden' tour in 2010 and the 'Brilliant' tour in 2012, he also used a Rickenbacker 4003 Fireglo finish bass and a standby black Fender Telecaster Bass."

Chris Cross, bassist of Ultravox, is known for his use of various bass guitars throughout his career. During the John Foxx era, he played a Guild B-301, a white Gibson EB-3, and fretless Fender Precision basses. In the recording of the "Vienna" album, he used a Yamaha bass and a Fender Precision bass. Cross's distinctive grey Ibanez RoadStar, from the early 1980s, was prominently featured in many Ultravox albums and was his primary instrument during the first leg of the 'Return to Eden' Tour in 2009. On subsequent tours, including 'Return to Eden' in 2010 and 'Brilliant' in 2012, he played a Rickenbacker 4003 Fireglo finish bass and a black Fender Telecaster Bass as a backup. According to the Ultravox Forum, Cross also utilized a Spector Euro 4LX bass in 2006.
