Devin Townsend's Amplifiers
For years I used a ton of different amps. I used Mesa Boogie for years; I loved their stuff. I used a [Peavey] 5150, a Budda, a Marshall, a Crate, a Gorilla…
At 8:08 in this video Devin Townsend of Vai, Front Line Assembly, The Wild Hearts, and Strapping Young Lad, talks about the amplifiers he uses. mentioning Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier for the rhythm sounds.
At the end of it, I had this combination of a Dual Rectifier with a Tube Screamer in front, and then the EVH 5150 III. I had a Bogner, a Soldano, this LAA Custom, Marshalls, and blah, blah, blah. I got a wicked big sound, then tracked the whole album. But I tracked it with a DI.
In this video Devin talks about his gear, including this one used in conjunction with Casualties of Cool.
"Profiling means you setup your amps and you can make what is essentially a tone print of your amp/mic chain to take with you. For the sake of weight, I wanted to try it.
"I’ve been using the Rectos for so long for a specific sound, but I wanted to see if we could do it with less weight. There’s a 23kg weight restriction when you fly and we have to keep our costs down. So I tried the Kemper and it’s worked out killer.
"This rack-mounted one has a 400-watt Class D power amplifier under it. So I have a Mesa cab onstage to get some sort of air movement, which I do like. I miss having amps onstage. The whole completely direct thing kind of sucked for me. So having the cab onstage has been great," says Devin Townsend, on Music Radar.
