Eric Clapton's Resonators
This Dobro was used by Eric Clapton at the Concert of the Century at the White House, 23rd October 1999 for the opening number, his rendition of Robert Johnson's Rambling On My Mind; and for the same Johnson song during the last leg of the Pilgrim Tour in Japan, November/December 1999. It has also been used on various recording sessions in the last three to five years, although no specific recordings have been identified.
Eric Clapton recalls that he has owned this guitar for a long time - at least twenty years. He commented that he used this National for playing slide both at home and in recording sessions.
Eric Clapton acquired this guitar in circa 1990s and had it set up for slide with a high action. The guitar has been mostly used tuned to open G.
Eric Clapton said that he used this guitar on the Blues Tour, 1994. According to Lee Dickson, Eric Clapton purchased this guitar from Charlie Chandler when he was at Olympic Studios, London, during the recording sessions for the From The Cradle album.
Eric Clapton said that this is one of the guitars he has owned for the longest period of time. He bought it in Nashville in the 1960s and remarked that he found this guitar "hard to play"...
Eric Clapton bought this guitar for collecting purposes. It has been taken to the studio a few times, and has possibly been played at rehearsals on occasion.
Lee Dickson said that this guitar was used on the soundtrack of the 1992 film Rush. Eric Clapton is pictured playing this guitar at The Royal Albert Hall in 1994.
Mike Lewis commented in 2010 that in 1995 he was invited to: "come and show some of my guitars to Eric when he was playing in Paris, which I did and he bought the Tricone. I had only been making guitars for two years, so I was one happy man. That guitar is the first one of that model and the only one to have LEWIS on the headstock (all the others after that had Fine Resophonic). The Ukulele [see Lot 23] was a gift to Eric just to have some fun with and it was one of a batch of five."
Eric Clapton acquired the 2002 Fine Resophonic Model 2 Flamed Maple guitar in Paris during his European Tour in April 2004, as documented by Bonhams.
This guitar was in the collection of Eric Clapton from 2006 until 2016. Derek Trucks used it on the "Doyle & Derek Tour" (by Clapton) in 2006/2007 for the acoustic version of Outside Woman Blues.
