James plays/played a most likely knockoff MIJ Gibson SG-styled bass, as shown by the jack plate and switches on the innersleeve of the 2023 "These Are Not Fall Colors" Lync vinyl reissue. It's also seen in a live performance of the song Turtle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCe_sMkrmmM).

In the YouTube video, James Bertram can be clearly seen using a Fender Precision Bass throughout the entire performance. This is further corroborated by multiple photographs taken during the show, this show was their final show at the Velvet Elvis on Oct. 11, 1994. They light the drum kit on fire at the end of the video.
