Jim Croce's Guitars
Jim Croce is seen playing a Martin D-28 acoustic guitar during his performance on "The Dick Cavett Show," as captured in the YouTube video by upperdarbybill. This guitar was a staple in his recordings.
Jim Croce was known to play a sunburst Ovation 1617 Legend acoustic-electric. According to his son, A.J. Croce, the guitar unfortunately burned in a house fire in 1987
The 1964 Gibson Dove is claimed to have been the designated recording guitar of Jim Croce. According to Tommy West, the producer of his albums, all three of them were recorded using that very guitar. Jim bought it at the end of the 1960's for West. When Croces had to sell almost all of their guitar equipment due to financial problems, he was allowed to use the Gibson during concerts. Originally, the guitar had a cherry sunburst finish and had a tune-o-matic bridge, later replaced with a fixed one by Phil Petillo. You can see the Dove being used at 20:20 in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_m6l_pJKaU
In this article you can see his D-21 sold for 50k and was authenticated by his estate. They also made a Jim Croce signature model D-21.
Jim Croce used the 1933 Gibson L-00 for songwriting, as confirmed by his son, A.J. Croce. Notably, songs such as "Operator," "Time in a Bottle," "New York's Not My Home," and "I'll Have to Say I Love You in a Song" were written on this guitar, according to A.J. Croce's statement on Facebook.
Jim Croce is documented to use a 1960's cherry sunburst Gibson Hummingbird, as seen in a Facebook reel featuring numerous photos of him. Additionally, his wife Ingrid Croce has also been photographed playing the same instrument, further supporting this claim.
Jim Croce is documented using a Gibson B45-12N (natural finish one with an adjustable bridge), as seen in a photo included in a Facebook reel captioned, "My grandfather, James Albert Croce...". Additionally, he was photographed playing this guitar at Villanova University, providing further confirmation.
In a video on YouTube, Jim Croce is seen performing "Spin, Spin, Spin" with his wife Ingrid from their second album "Jim & Ingrid Croce," where he is clearly playing a sunburst Gibson B-45-12 acoustic guitar
