Jimmy Herring's Effects Pedals
"I finally got a little time off and broke out my '73 Super Lead and the KoT pedal. MAN, I grabbed a '63 strat and just cranked it, mostly using the clean boost side of the KoT. It IS ridiculous! I thought that was good till I grabbed the Jerry Jones Baritone Guitar… then I was just plain stunned… I love that pedal! It goes great with an old Marshall!"
In an interview with Premier Guitar, Jimmy Herring discusses using the Hughes & Kettner Tube Factor overdrive pedal. He prefers the green channel with the gain set at noon and places the pedal on top of his amp, operating it via a remote switch. The pedal is designed with a jack for this purpose, eliminating the need for special MIDI switchers.
Jimmy runs this pedal between the speaker out from his amp, and the input of the Crown power amps. It is set 100% wet, and a volume pedal manipulates the volume of the reverb.
Jimmy uses an Ernie Ball VP JR. volume pedal to control both, his volume while playing, as well as another one to control the amount of reverb that is mixed into his signal while he is playing.
At 15:03 the camera zooms in and you can clearly see that Jimmy uses an Ernie Ball VP JR. volume pedal (not a standard Ernie Ball VP volume pedal, as this title of this entry indicates).
At 10:40 Jimmy demonstrates how he uses the volume pedal while playing to control his volume.
At 11:04 he explains how the only effect he uses is reverb using an Eventide Space reverb unit (although he is known to use a couple of other distortion effects pedals to get his sound, like the H&K unit and King of Tone pedal) , and he controls the amount of reverb that is mixed into his sound while playing through the use of another Ernie Ball VP JR. volume pedal.
At 12:00 he demonstrates the use of the VP JR. pedal to mix the amount of reverb he wants while he plays.
