On Paul Jackson's website, he states that a heavily modified Fender Telecaster bass is what he played on the first Headhunters album. He can be seen using it during a live performance on Danish TV in 1976, as well. The original finish was removed, the pickups replaced with Bartolini Hi-As, the bridge changed to a Badass, and multiple output jacks were installed.
