William DuVall's Amplifiers
"Amp-wise, this band has always favored a hot-rodded Marshall philosophy. My own taste still tends towards the old non-master-volume models, or boutique amps that are sort of trying to reproduce the non-master-volume Marshalls or Vox amps of the ’60s. But it’s been cool to discover some of the really good companies that are making a more high-end nuclear amp, like Bogner. Cantrell’s been using Friedman Marshas on tour for the last couple of years, and I really like the sound of those. I actually used one of his Marshas for the solo in “Phantom Limb.” It was my number one Les Paul through the Marsha and it was a wrap. I nailed it in one take or two because it just sounded so right."
Well, here’s the thing, I’m not looking at these things so much as signature pieces. What I wanted was the most functional boutique Marshall-style amplifier that we could make without having a billion knobs on it. I wanted something that had the best of all world when it comes to functionality and simplicity and quality component and tone. That’s what George and I were after with the DVL-1. The idea is that anyone with any guitar can plug into it and find what they’re looking for. It wasn’t like ‘oh, you’re playing my amp.’ No. You’re playing your amp. I just helped bring it into being. I didn’t see one out there so I helped bring one into the world.
I’m running cabs. Metropoulos used to make these cabinets that were replicas of the '68 4x12s that Marshall used to do back when they were more heavy duty. The joints were more solid and the birch that they used was great. everything was thicker and heavier duty and I think the cab dimensions were even a little bit bigger back then. So all the guys who were using stacks back then, like Hendrix, not the extra tall cabinets though - those are really cool in their own way - I’m just talking about the standard 4x12s that were made in '67 and '68, George made exact replicas of those. He did kind of an obsessive reverse engineering thing like Stephens Design did on the pickups and he built these things. He had the '67 ones that had the pinstripe grill cloth, he had [EC Collins] do the grills for those. Then the '68 ones had the basket weave and I got a couple of those '68 ones and god those are good cabinets.
William DuVall is listed on the Matchless Amplifiers website as a user of the Matchless HC-30 Guitar Amp Head.
I had the Vintage 30s and then the 70th anniversary gold 30 watt speakers Celestions - I have two of each in each cabinet. They’re amazing.
In the Premier Guitar Rig Rundown featuring Jerry Cantrell, at approximately 0:48, Cantrell mentions that William DuVall used Bogner Fish preamps during the "Black Gives Way to Blue" tour.
