The Hotcake is my favorite OD hands down. In a words: luscious.
I'm running through a solid state Blues Cube and it really responds well to this OD. Being a big fan of Mark Knopfler, this pedal unlocked a sweet spot with something akin to the "Sultins" sound in tandem with my Tele.
In comparing with the Cult Germanium which is ultra responsive to pick attack & volume, the Hotcake holds its own but the Cult response is mystical. The Hotcake wins for clean where the Cult adds some noise when 'silent'.
I'm not including the Lex in the M3 AmpTop rig, but the Hotcake in tandem with Lex and its OD at about 2:00 is really incredible. I love it!
Cheers! ~m

Just ordered my first pedal board! I'm starting small with the Chemistry Design Werks Holeyboard M3 AmpTop. I figured it would give me a chance to wrap my head around the in's & out's of setup with a small cadre of my go-to FX (Aetos, Tuner, Ditto, Hotcake, Cult & CE-3). I'm stoked at finally being able to get a stable setup and not having to futz with hookup every time I play. ~m

Re: the Ditto Looper... I just received one last night. I knew they were small, but was actually surprised at how small. They are miniscule! I haven't had time to work with it yet. ~m

Just got my V-Moda Crossfades... phenomenal!

Really impressed with the clarity, bass and response. Sound isolation as an over-ear is excellent. Wireless or wired is a nice bonus.
All said and done, I recommend!

Hah! Short quip and a good laugh. Thanks Jim! I've had very good luck with the Blues Cube and pedals with one exception: Plimsoul. I answered my own question with the Lex whose pre-amp sounds awesome through the BC when cranked. There's just so much info on the interwebs its hard to know what to believe. Just gotta hear it I guess. ~m

question: do overdrive pedals & solid state amps mix? wondering what to expect and if i'd be wasting my time and money in purchasing an Messner OD pedal while owning a Blues Cube Stage amp. ~m

Yup. No comparison. I have to give a nod to the FX100 has basically become my trail head on the path from interesting gear to really incredible gear. The X1 is pretty kick ass I must say. It definitely outshines the emulation of the Line 6. ~m

I have made two wishlist acquisitions in the 2 weeks: the Xotic X1 Wah (delivered) and the Strymon Lex (en route). Taking the X1 for a test drive last night and digging in. Very nice. Sounds great. Having never had a wah other than the Line 6 FX100, I am really happy with this piece of gear. I've definitely got some playing around to do. ~m

...it's better to save up and buy the expensive thing you know you want and will like VS...>
I couldn't agree more. In the same vein I've the mistake of going for the thing that it attainable now, VS having the patience of waiting for the thing I really want.
I'm planning on a pedal board so trying to be as methodical and patient as possible. The planning, dare I say, the dreaming is half the fun.
Good topic.

I recieved my Ultimate Blues Tone Capsule for the Blues Cube today and loving the mod. In a short round of playing it's certainly more well rounded and warm. The clean channel is not as pristine as before so there is the compromise, but dialing down the guitar volume a touch cleans it right up. There is a bit more compression as well so really pleased after a quick go. After dropping the Plimsoul in line it sounded good, but this pedal has a really narrow sweet spot so not necessarily my fave. Can't wait to get some more playing time in. ~m

The Hello-Thread: Please Allow Me To Introduce Myself 👋
Hello to you all!
In the spirit of being neighborly, er... maybe friendly is a better term, I've got some crazy neighbors,... I figured I should follow suit and say hello while also giving a nod to the real EquipBoard movers and shakers.
My name is Michael. I am a Digital Artist/Designer by trade and a Musician at heart. As a Utahn, I was originally plucked from my own private Idaho. Nothing exotic. My wife and I prefer dogs to kids and love to travel. In getting out, we aim toward destinations based on regional cuisine. I love music, but live for food.
As for music, I started on clarinet when I really wanted to play drums. I pitched the woodwind for guitar, then took up piano before I ever got to drums. Playing off-and-on for the last 39 years, my musical tastes are geared towards guitar, though I would take Ginger Baker over God any day.
I've really found my time spent on EB to be inspiring if not thought provoking and some of the conversations have definitely sent me down the rabbit hole (thanks Jim!) on my own little tone quest.
So to you all, I'd like to also give a hearty thank you for the good info and healthy perspective.
Cheers!

I agree with your line of thought totally. If you're gonna make something, make it unique. Its a personal thing. ~m

Per your mention, I checked out USA Customs and I was impressed. They've got some nice options. ~m

Heh! I'm not looking to buy, but I have to say, you've got good trouble on your hands compared to the curves life can throw the less fortunate. You make me laugh and also relish the fact that we are in good company here. ~m

I have been struggling with a similar internal debate so loved seeing the subject cracked open here! I was considering a low-cost turnkey or a kit like xyez just to experiment but recently shifted gears and am getting serious about modding a used Tele. When I find one at a reasonable "bargain", I'm in. Prior to that decision, I played a lot of guitars, but just wasn't finding any that hit a price point that I was comfortable with potentially ruining. Still, the search is half the fun. In that, the Epi Tomkat had its appeal but I made the mistake of laying my hands on a D'Angelico and the Wildkat just couldn't compare. In doing a bit more searching (soul and web) the Tele is where I'm heading. Owning a Tele is a wishlist thing. I'm no tech wiz, but I'm comfortable with the electrics. Wood finish-work is another story. Let's just say, once I have to touch the finish, the instrument will likely end up looking accidentally relic'd. ~m

It seems mention of the Plimsoul brought some polarizing views. I'm still digging it though realize it has a very narrow sweet spot for my setup. Th bottom end gets pretty muddy and I haven't yet nailed it. All in all, it adds a nice texture through the Blues Cube Stage. ~m

Mind blown! I've got some learning to do and a tube amp to add to my wish list! I was digging the Plimsoul last night. Kept it simple with the Descimator. Realizing also that Robin Trower I am not. ~m

Well, I had an acquisition roadmap (aka budget & timeline) to get gradually get my must-haves on the effects front and just made a little, spontaneous detour to boost land. I ordered an Xotic RC Scott Henderson (copper) yesterday. I'm only just getting the new Plimsoul warmed-up. Keep in mind, I'm dealing with that squeaky kid-voice in my head, pestering my soul with his incessant: "Are we there yet?" My response: "No son, it's gonna be a little while longer. Sit back and enjoy the ride." ~m
