The Tomb Sender from BLAMMO! Electronics is a “new-meets-old” take on the classic and beloved Sola Sound Tone Bender Mkiii. Hand selected new-old-stock NPN germanium transistors, carbon composition resistors, and accurate component values keep the heart of the Tomb Sender true, while an updated relay based true bypass switching system, added make up gain stage for more output, and beefed up power filtering section offer less hiss and hum plus modern usability.

Four potentiometers and one toggle switch hold sway over the Tomb Sender. Let’s go over what they are and what they can do for you.

The Volume control works the way you would expect but offers more output so your signal won’t dip below unity gain on the skronkier settings. The Bias knob controls the voltage level of the second germanium transistor and offers zippy, Velcro-like splattery and gated wonkyness when set the lowest and does the familiar Tone Bender mkiii sounds when turned all the way up. The Attack controls the fuzz gain, offering more bite and compression when set on high with a more open and raw tone when dialed left. The Tone control isn’t your standard “set it and forget it / one sound” type of knob. Useable throughout its entire sweep, it offers more bass frequencies without cutting the highs when turned left, and more highs with some bass cut when knobbed to the right. The toggle switch operates a simple noise gate that cuts a good portion of the background noise/muck between notes, but also works well with the Bias knob to finely tune the broken and dying battery sounds the Tomb Sender has to offer.

The sonic blueprint was set in late-1950s England, then modified, evolved and refined through to the hand-made, boutique valve amps of the 21st century. We’ve included a mid boost switch to add bite and overdrive for rich, vocal lead tones.Try it with the bass cut and plenty of gain for classic rock soloing bliss.

REVERB

VC35 has a no-hassle, super-reliable digital reverb (like our V40) to keep you ambient. Somewhere between room and plate... and there’s plenty available!

MASTER TONE CUT

This global tone control works as it does in the classic Vox amps... except the trebly stuff is found clockwise. It’s great for that final high-end response tone tweak to your playing environment.

HIGH & LOW POWER

35 watts/full power is great for punch and headroom; 12 watts low power gives less volume, more compression and a different harmonic and dynamic response.

SERIES EFFECT LOOP

If you’re running the VC35 gainy, your time-based effects – reverb and delay – will stay cleaner sounding here. For classic clean tones, run effects into the front.

EXTERNAL BIAS TEST & ADJUSTMENT

When it’s time to change your EL84 output valves, you can test and adjust the bias for the replacements quickly and safely.

THOR is my third ever circuit design. At the time, I was playing a lot of live music and I wanted a gated fuzz, but all the available ones had no bass and much too low output. THOR fixed this. I still never released it. There's been a few copies out there in the wild throughout the last 10-15 years, and for whatever reason I still haven't found myself in the position to release it. It's an emotional thing, I suppose.

However, at the same time as I ordered the FJÆR PCBs I also ordered a few prototype boards for THOR. Then it struck me: what if I release it as a secret pedal that only you, my most cherished subscribers can access? You can give me feedback on it, show it to your friends, and hopefully it can become the wild and wonderful cult fuzz it's always felt like, at least to me! I'm ordering 50 units now and that's that. If it turns out extremely popular, I might order more, but definitely not at that price point. Until then, feel free to grab one whilst you can, and I promise you you'll find some sweet riffs within it!

2SB171 and 2SB175 Germanium transistors

We have some really cool 1960s Japanese 2SB transistors that we are using for our germanium Sunfaces. These are a little brighter and fuzzier than the NKTs. They are usually made by Hitachi, Toshiba, or Matsushita. I remember buying dead Japanese Acetone organs back in the early 1990s to get 2SB175 transistors for making Fuzzfaces when a friend told me how great they sounded. The 2SB is a little darker and woolier than the TI/UK. Some of these that measure at low gain are great in our low gain germanium option, to duplicate the sound and great cleanup of the white dot NKT275. We have two models of the 2SB, the 2SB171 which is lower gain and the 2SB175 which is higher gain. Both sound great, smoother than the other germaniums, not as much edge.

These 2SB transistors were often used in the Japanese CRAZY FACE fuzz pedals sold at Sears in the early 1970s, small black round Fuzz Face clones. They usually sounded bad because they were not biased correctly. By changing a few resistor values they can be tuned to sound excellent.

The Supro 1310 Tremolo is a tribute to the golden age of tube amp modulation effects. This analog stompbox delivers two distinct flavors of vintage tremolo, recreating the iconic sounds found in classic American amplifiers of the 1960s. This Sunface has BART transistors. These are large Russian transistors, they sound HUGE too. Easy to use, cut well, nice and fuzzy with cleanup all the way on the guitar pot. Our BART transistors are inherently medium-high gain range.

This Sunface has a Standard 2N Germanium Transistor.

We now put the SUN DIAL on the Sunface to make a 3 knob small gold pedal. The middle knob is on the center of the Sun Face Graphics. It is the exact same function and circuit as the internal BIAS trim pot on the 2 knob model. It is used for keeping the fuzz happy at different temperatures, and with different or worn batteries. We call it the SUN DIAL and the knob is painted to match the pedal. We factory set the SUNDIAL so the face is vertical at our shop temperature (70 degrees or so depending on if it's Winter or Summer!). You can set it by ear, just turn it up until the buzziness goes away as much as you like. Jim Weider has an NKT Sunface with the SUN DIAL and likes to run the sundial higher than our normal setting, he turns it almost all the way up for less fuzz and a purer tone. You can turn it down all the way for a buzzy sound like "spirit in the sky", where the fuzz fizzes out.
