A stronger arguement for getting a proper recording kit I've yet to see.

Stolen Melodies

This looks both fun and dangerously bottomless. I'll start ripping apart everything I write if I'm not careful...

Stupid, baseless lawsuits over musical copyright infringement would be a fun addition for sure...

Checking your recordings on Alexa, Google Home, & soon...Apple Home Pod

So I don't want ANY of these things in my home. Most definately not connected to the internet. Just gives me the creeps but that's just me.

I did get a Beats Pill and JBL's similar model for checking mixes long while back and also use them for watching movies cuz laptop speakers just suck.

Now it's clear I'm really gonna have to try these guys out as more and more people are gonna hear whatever I put out- my clients or my own music - on one or more of these devices.

The thing I'm constantly annoyed with is not having a L & R channel stereo field. Just kills so many recordings.

Also- I recently I posted a thing on Wave's new plugin for trippy panning and the McGurk Effect. I had to pop in headphones to watch the demo cuz I couldn't really get the picture with the JBL over bluetooth.

Ugh...Bluetooth...enough there for thread of it's own. SLUSSSHHHY. Digital Slushfest...Anyway...

Anyone else already doing this got any thoughts?

Anyone prefer one to the other for listening to music? Why for cuz how?

Gotta feeling you're about to get hit with a list of kick butt "must watch" movies/docs on music. At least I hope so.

I was gonna start a thread on that but I was sure someone already has...I'll look into that.

The Death of the Electric Guitar

Huh, interesting. I'd still argue that even that can be explained in part by apps like Yousician and the like.

JamStick seems to be doing well also.

There definately is a culture shift, I just don't think it's one that spells the "doom" of El Guit. Jesus, I'm not labeling tracks... ELECTRIC GUITAR. Whew, feelin better...

With every shift there's always a reflexive backlash. Grunge, LoFi Recording, the totally madhouse Garage Rock thing 10 years ago-ish, etc.

Could also look to the success of revival tours.

The client I've been tracking this week is playing with Iggy Pop in a few weeks for f's sake...tho that might just evidence of a bit of jelousy on my part.

Cover study the masters. James droped a great list I've yet to stop learning from/and inspired by and doubt I ever will.

What's that kick ass documentary? THE WRECKING CREW! Go watch it, you'll love it or I'll buy you a damn copy of Ableton or FL. I might just go watch it again too...in that universe where I have "spare time".

The Death of the Electric Guitar

Nothing much to add- You pretty much nailed it. I'd be more interested in the search data for "guitar tab" than "electric guitar".

I still hear guitar all over loads of production, just not always is the traditional sense of say your The Who, Kinks, etc.

A quick peak into how people write tunes you'll often see they start on keys or guitar even if it doesn't make it into the final product in the same way.

"with the rise of the Mega Hoarders (who display their collections in museums.... what a waste)"

God I hate this culture. Only thing more corrosive is Wall Street peeps buying instruments they can't even play as an "investment". If the word "investment" has ever been more bastardized I've yet to hear it. Total waste and contiunes to trainwreck more and more makes...

The guitar ain't goin' anywhere. Even sounds click bait-y. "Death of the electric guitar". Not buying it.

Mixing for Spotify, iTunes, YouTube, etc. self publishing your music & the death of the "Loudness War"

Anyone familiar with mixing for different online formats? It's part of my day to day now but I hear a ton of stuff self published stuff online that just sounds hashed for not knowing how to mix for each medium.

It's actaully really easy to fix now. All my clients get a seperate mix for all the major online platforms on top of a copy of their mastering house mix be it for vinyl, etc. (cuz in some cases I know they're likely gonna post it before it's mastered- & even if it gets mastered/mastered properly). It's got my name on it no matter what- so damn if I'm gonna let something come out sounding shitty with my name on it.

The short version is that now almost every online streaming format now has a normilization algorithm that renders "slammed" heavily complressed mixes less...plesant. It favors more dynamic mixes basically.

I use a couple of tools in mix down- iZotope Ozone has a handy "preview" feature for WAV, mp3, etc. and I then it was a bit of trial and error to figure out what worked best on each online streaming format. That was the catch- None of these streaming services are gonna tell you HOW their algorithms work cuz then people would just try and game the system. Now there are some tools out there that will actaully let you know how to mix for each service. Dynameter is what I'm using currently.

Check it out-

http://meterplugs.com/dynameter

Not a paid endorsement of course- I'm sure there are many similar services that do the same job.

Check out the videos and you'll get a much better explaination of how this stuff works and why it matters for anyone who posts their own music online. If only so you know how this will effect you.

Get your parallel compression game face on...

Last note- as far as I know Soundcloud is one of the few services that DOESN'T use this tech that I'm aware of...

Lord I remeber the days when I just checked my mixes on a few headphones, monitors, speakers, & in the car. (pro tip- you can quickly & easily build yourself a FM trasmitter so you can easily check mixes in your car and tweak away much faster. No more multiple bounces!)

Jam with people via MIDI over Internet...

Sweet, I'm psyched to catch up with ya when you do. 1 day of tracking turned into 3- always a good thing but now I'm way behind on researching this. Now the parents are in town so this weekend is just about when I'll be able to dig back into this stuff.

Anytime. My Wife is a properly trained vocalist & she's really sharpened my ears in that reguard. She got me doing the vocal warm ups (that just sound absolutely silly until you hear the results) back in the day. My vocals still suck but they get markedly better every time I do warm ups before hand/regularly.

Glad it was well recived I didn't wanna sound like I was panning ya.

Yep, keep at it- great you've got people to jam with. Work on pitch a bit- I'm no vocalist- sure I've sung plenty but always deadpan cuz that's all I can pull of but if I was producing this? I'd want ya to to work on those vocals for sure. I'd recomend doing some vocal warm ups every day and definately before every session/practice. Loads of tutorials and such on YouTube and on the internet in general.

Great to hear you got what ya need man!

Sorry gang, I took some last minute bookings so I have't had any time to dig further yet. Been all tracking and fucking file management here. I'm obsessed tho so it's gonna get done.

Can you make good (insert genre) music? Something that's great fir capturing that is a lil' do-hicky called a "DAW". Turns out you can play anything you'd like up to the limits of your ability! Like any of them! What a world, enh?

SERIOUSLY. Look into it.

Jam with people via MIDI over Internet...

Woah, that's creapy. I've been thinking more broadly on the concept cuz I haven't had anytime where I could actually look at that site/service.

I was at the beach w/ some engineer buddies (not muical) so I was picking brains on this idea until I just had to do a quick google search. I figured SOMEONE must have sorted it out-

That was just one of the results.

Yer spidey senses are on point, I deffinately wanna dig in & get the skinny.

Tomorrow I'll get the time to dig in & finally help figure this or something else like it out.

Jam with people via MIDI over Internet...

Sure, what I'm thinkin' of is different. I just got the Jupiter 8 from Arturia & Jim & I were shooting the shit about it & I got to thinkin'...

If we can play video games with people all over the world no problem, why the fuck can't I say, "invite" Jim into a joint session so he could trigger, etc. whatever I've got loaded up? MIDI is tiny by comparison!

It kept nagging at me cuz it seemed like something obvious. Like imagine a session like this-

Jim, you, & I decide we wanna jam together at X o'clock. Without getting too technical- why couldn't one of us "invite" the rest in & we all play in unison? I'm thinking of a super basic structure for the sake of this example-like say me laying down a beat & building on it, you're knocking out a baseline & Jim is playing a lead part- & we could all record it so we could build on it later.

So in theory, Jim could be say- triggering all the MIDI on an instance I have up of the Jupiter 8, I could be triggering your drum samples/sampler, & you could be playing Jim's synths for the bass parts.

There is a lot of other considerations of course-like who's clock is the master, DAW compatability, & getting everything to sync- but if people can play Call Of Duty how could this be that hard? Like the manufacturer would handle the heavy lifting & the user tweaks it for a sessions needs.

All I could come up with was it could seriously shake up the plugin market.

TELL ME THAT WOULDN'T BE AWESOME!

No choises, no song. Luck for those who struggle with that it's fairly easy to break. Just like anything else, set a deadline. A day, 2 days at most. Whatever you got done in that time is what ya got & start a new one. More times at bat, more you'll hit the ball. Same with recording.

Tape was so baked into me early on it's actully kinda weird but fun to watch how other people work. I think mine woukd trip them oit as well. Fuckin' works for me tho!

Martins...those damn Martins...& Martin people don't help. Only ones I've liked are from the same area as well. Still I've never played one I felt like I needed to have, just it'd be nice.

"Maybe tis just that I don't like modern martins"

FUCK those Martins. Only ones I've ever liked are in the bankrupcy price range. I'd take a Gibson, a Guild, or a good Epiphone over a Martin any day.

I'll never understand why people love them so much- or at least what seems like totally unconditionally. I call 'em dorm guitars. They sound just so stupidly over the top...Few exceptions like my buddy from your neck of the woods we've talked about plays one as his main acoustic and I've played it and I did actually like that one...but that's a rare exception. Martins are like that band everyone loves and you just can NOT figure out why for me...with the accompanying rage.

Still not enough time to get to the studio to listen/watch by I'm glad to see some choices are being made. You're making me think there is stil hope yet kid. I hope you're younger I don't mean that in a bad way.

You don't need to be in any particular program, just have to be a student w/ a even kinda current student ID. Hell, you don't even need to do that! I'm not saying I would hustle the hardworkers @ Avid but you just need a current college ID & yer good. Same goes with most plugins...

Just don't fuck with FabFilter, I love those guys & they're already very reasonably priced & all around great to use...down the line of course...

The McGurk Effect & the new Waves plugin...

Okay, I'll come clean. I had to try it. $30 & under I'll try just about anything. If any of you wanna futz with it it's only $19 bucks with that code I posted.

I was beat so I haven't used it yet but I watched the 25min how-to video.

I've never felt so sea-sick. It can get just silly. It actually is kinda cool tho. Check out the video just be sure to have some Dramamine on hand. He gets nuts with it.

I can see using it for some cool practical FX stuff.

Or to just make a dificult client barf. Dear god if you listened to it in full wacky mode w/ headphones on? Yeah, yer gonna barf for sure.

James- Totally. I've had it happen mixing on a board when the assistant or intern didn't label correctly too. If it worked I just wouldn't say a thing...at least not till the client was gone.

They don't offer a subscription service like PriTools, etc. to they?

OH YEAH! KID! You can just get a subscription DAW that's full featured!

ProTools is only $10 bucks a month!
