About
Behexen is a Finnish black metal band formed in 1994, notorious for their intense and raw sonic exploration of dark themes. Originating in Nokia, Finland, the group was initially founded by Torog (vocals), Horns (drums), and Reaper (guitars). Over time, they expanded their lineup to include Gargantum (guitar) and Lunatic (bass), with Veilroth later joining as a second guitarist. Behexen has carved a niche in the black metal genre, often labeled as autonomous, pagan, and voidgaze black metal. Their discography, which includes the seminal album Rituale Satanum, demonstrates their commitment to maintaining the raw, unfiltered essence of black metal.
How to Sound Like Behexen
Behexen’s sound is fiercely aggressive and unrelenting, characterized by a visceral, raw quality that emphasizes the harshness and bleakness of their themes. The band typically employs distorted, saturated guitar tones that are both abrasive and evocative, often achieved through the use of guitars like the Gibson SG Gothic and Gibson Goth Explorer. These guitars help create a dense, oppressive atmosphere that is further amplified by frenetic drumming and guttural vocal delivery. The rhythm section maintains a relentless pace, while the layered guitar work weaves intricate and chaotic melodies. To emulate their sound, musicians should focus on achieving a balance of raw power and atmospheric bleakness, utilizing heavy distortion and minimalistic effects to allow the innate aggression of the music to shine through.
