About
Genesis is an iconic British rock band that has left an indelible mark on the music world with their innovative blend of genres, including progressive rock, pop rock, and symphonic rock. Originating from Godalming, Surrey in 1967, the band was initially fronted by Peter Gabriel (vocals, flute). The classic lineup also featured Tony Banks (keyboards, guitar), Mike Rutherford (guitar, bass), Steve Hackett (guitar), and Phil Collins (drums, vocals). Over the years, Genesis evolved from their early progressive rock roots to embrace a more accessible pop sound, achieving global success during the 1980s with Phil Collins as the lead vocalist.
How to Sound Like Genesis
Genesis' music is characterized by its dynamic range and intricate compositions, often weaving together lush, symphonic elements with rock-driven energy. Early in their career, their sound was marked by the use of complex time signatures and theatrical storytelling, driven by Banks' mastery of the Mellotron MkII and Moog Polymoog Synthesizer, which added layers of orchestral depth. The guitar work of Steve Hackett, with its use of tapping and sustain, created a melodic, almost ethereal quality, while Rutherford's rhythmic precision on both Vox AC30 and bass provided a solid backbone. In their later years, Genesis leaned towards a cleaner, more polished sound that highlighted Collins’ powerful vocals and vibrant drum work, as exemplified by his use of the Paiste Formula 602 22" Ride. The band’s ability to seamlessly adapt and innovate across different musical styles has made them a lasting influence in the world of rock music.
