About
Brutal Truth is a pioneering grindcore band from New York, known for their relentless aggression and socially conscious lyricism. Formed in 1990, the group originally consisted of Kevin Sharp (vocals), Brent "Gurn" McCarthy (guitar), Dan Lilker (bass), and Scott Lewis (drums). After a lineup change, Rich Hoak took over drumming duties. Their music, a fusion of grindcore, death metal, and extreme metal, is characterized by its rapid tempos and complex rhythms. Albums like Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses and Need to Control have cemented their reputation as genre-defining works.
How to Sound Like Brutal Truth
Brutal Truth's sound is defined by its raw, chaotic energy and uncompromising intensity. The band employs a dirty, abrasive sonic palette with distorted guitar riffs and pummeling drum patterns. Bassist Dan Lilker's use of the Rickenbacker 4001 and Jackson JJ Bass contributes to the low-end ferocity, often enhanced by the Tech 21 SansAmp GT2 for a gritty, overdriven tone. The combination of thundering bass lines and shredding guitar work creates a visceral, aggressive soundscape that is both chaotic and precise, embodying the essence of grindcore.
