About

Repulsion is a pioneering American band in the grindcore and death metal genres, originating from Flint, Michigan, in 1985. Initially named Genocide, the group soon rebranded to Repulsion, comprising Scott Carlson (vocals, bass), Aaron Freeman (guitar), Matt Olivo (guitar), and Dave Grave (drums). Known for their raw, fast-paced sound and horror-themed lyrics, Repulsion played a crucial role in shaping the grindcore movement during its formative years. Their influential 1986 album, Horrified, remains a seminal work, cited by many later bands as a major influence.

How to Sound Like Repulsion

Repulsion's sound is characterized by its aggressive, visceral intensity, marked by rapid tempos and distorted guitar riffs. Their music delivers a relentless sonic assault, often achieved through the use of high-gain amplifiers such as the Marshall JCM800 2203 and the Peavey 6505+. The gritty, abrasive guitar tones are complemented by driving bass lines, often played on a Fender Precision Bass, adding a thunderous low end to their tracks. Drumming is furious and unyielding, providing a chaotic backdrop that propels their music forward. The use of effects like the Boss DS-1 Distortion enhances their raw, unpolished sound, making their music a perfect embodiment of the early grindcore ethos.
