About

Can is a pioneering German band that emerged from the avant-garde and experimental music scenes of the late 1960s. Formed in Cologne in 1968, the group's founding members include Irmin Schmidt (keyboards), Holger Czukay (bass, tape), Michael Karoli (guitar, vocals), and Jaki Liebezeit (drums). Vocalists Malcolm Mooney and later Damo Suzuki added unique dimensions to their sound. Can’s music defies easy categorization, blending elements of Krautrock, psychedelic rock, experimental rock, and proto-punk, creating a hypnotic and innovative sonic experience that has influenced countless artists across genres.

How to Sound Like Can

Can's sound is characterized by its hypnotic, rhythmic grooves and experimental textures, often described as both ambient and raw. Their music features layered, improvisational guitar work, reminiscent of the 1966 Fender Stratocaster used by Michael Karoli, combined with a dense and driving bass sometimes played on a Fender Jazz Bass by Holger Czukay. Analog effects and tape manipulation play a significant role, creating a soundscape that is both spacious and intimate. Drummer Jaki Liebezeit’s metronomic precision adds a steady pulse to their compositions, while the use of effects like the Eventide H910 Harmonizer pushes their sound into uncharted territories. Can’s music thrives on the interplay between organic performance and electronic experimentation, making it a vibrant template for musicians seeking to explore the boundaries of rock music.
