About

Cathedral is a British doom metal band hailing from Coventry, England, formed in 1989. The group was founded by vocalist Lee Dorrian, following his departure from Napalm Death, with the goal of exploring a slower, heavier sound reminiscent of Black Sabbath. The original lineup included Mark Griffiths (guitar, then bass), Gary Jennings (guitar), and Andy Baker (drums), though the band experienced several lineup changes over the years. Cathedral is celebrated for merging doom metal with stoner and sludge elements, crafting a unique sound that has influenced many in the genre.

How to Sound Like Cathedral

Cathedral's sound is characterized by its heavy, plodding riffs and dark, atmospheric tones. Their music often combines thick, overdriven guitar sounds with sludgy bass lines, creating a dense and immersive sonic landscape. The use of a Gibson SG Standard by guitarist Garry Jennings is key to achieving their deep, resonant guitar tone. Amplifiers like the Marshall JCM800 2203 provide a classic, raw edge, while effects such as the Boss DS-1 Distortion add grit and sustain. The result is a heavy, monolithic sound that emphasizes texture and weight over speed, perfectly complementing Dorrian's haunting, gravelly vocals.
