About
Dissection was a pioneering force in the Swedish extreme metal scene, blending elements of death metal, black metal, and melodic death metal to create a unique and influential sound. Formed in 1989 in Gothenburg, Sweden, the band was the brainchild of Jon Nödtveidt (vocals, guitar), with Peter Palmdahl (bass) and Ole Öhman (drums) completing the original lineup. Known for their intense and dark compositions, Dissection's music is characterized by its intricate guitar work and atmospheric depth. The band's lineup saw several changes over the years, with notable members like John Zwetsloot (guitar) and Tomas Asklund (drums) contributing to their evolving sound. Key releases include their seminal albums The Somberlain and Storm of the Light's Bane, which have left a lasting legacy in the metal genre.
How to Sound Like Dissection
Dissection's sound is a complex tapestry of aggressive, melodic, and atmospheric elements. Their music often features fast-paced, intricate guitar riffs that are both melodic and ferocious, creating a sound that is both haunting and powerful. This is achieved through the use of Gibson Les Paul Custom and Gibson Flying V guitars, known for their rich, full-bodied tones. The Marshall JCM900 4100 amplifier head provides the necessary punch and clarity to cut through the mix, while distortion pedals such as the Boss DS-2 Turbo Distortion and Boss MT-2 Metal Zone add a layer of raw intensity. Their compositions are often layered with melancholic melodies and atmospheric passages, creating a soundscape that is both epic and somber—a testament to their mastery of the melodic black metal aesthetic.
