About
Satyricon is a pioneering force in the Norwegian black metal scene, known for their innovative approach and genre-defying sound. Formed in Oslo in 1991, the band's core consists of Satyr (Sigurd Wongraven, vocals, guitar) and Frost (Kjetil-Vidar Haraldstad, drums). Over the years, Satyricon has evolved from traditional black metal roots into a broader sonic landscape that includes elements of symphonic black metal, pagan black metal, and black 'n' roll. Their early works, such as Dark Medieval Times and Nemesis Divina, helped redefine the second wave of black metal, while later albums like Now, Diabolical showcase their continuous evolution and refusal to conform to genre norms.
How to Sound Like Satyricon
Satyricon's sound is characterized by a dark, atmospheric intensity that blends aggressive riffs with a more polished, expansive production style. The guitars often deliver a powerful punch, combining the raw energy of black metal with a more refined edge. This is achieved using instruments like the Gibson Les Paul Studio Electric Guitar and the ESP Custom Nemesis Divina Tribute, which provide the dense, melodic textures that define their music. Amplification through setups like the Mesa/Boogie Dual Rectifier 100W head enhances their sound with its powerful, tube-driven distortion. Drums play a crucial role, with Frost's precise and relentless technique adding a dynamic rhythmic layer to their compositions. Together, these elements create Satyricon's unique blend of melodic aggression and atmospheric depth, appealing to fans of both traditional black metal and more experimental metal sounds.
