About

Far is a Sacramento-based band that made a significant impact on the post-hardcore and alternative metal scenes. Formed in 1991, the group consists of Jonah Sonz Matranga (vocals), Shaun Lopez (guitar), John Gutenberger (bass), and Chris Robyn (drums). Known for their emotive and intense music, Far blends the raw energy of emo with the powerful dynamics of alternative metal. Despite not achieving massive commercial success, their work, particularly the 1998 album Water & Solutions, has been highly influential, inspiring bands like Thursday and Jimmy Eat World.

How to Sound Like Far

Far's sound is characterized by its dynamic interplay between melodic vocals and aggressive instrumentation. The band's music often shifts between reflective, ambient passages and explosive, high-energy sections. This duality is supported by Lopez's use of guitars like the Fender Stratocaster and 1974 Gibson Les Paul 20th Anniversary, which provide both clarity and depth. His occasional use of the Novation Peak Desktop Synthesizer adds an additional layer of texture, enriching the band's sonic palette with its versatile, ambient soundscapes. Drums and bass work together to create a tight, driving rhythm section, anchoring the emotional intensity of the vocals and guitar. The combination of these elements results in a sound that is both emotionally resonant and sonically powerful.
