About
Finntroll is a Finnish metal band renowned for their innovative fusion of folk metal with elements of black metal, melodic death metal, and traditional Finnish folk music. Formed in Helsinki in 1997, the group was originally conceived by Teemu "Somnium" Raimoranta (guitar) and Jan "Katla" Jämsen (vocals), who sought to blend the raw intensity of metal with regional folk melodies. The band’s lineup has evolved over the years and includes members like Samuli "Skrymer" Ponsimaa (guitar), Samu "Beast Dominator" Ruotsalainen (drums), Henri "Trollhorn" Sorvali (keyboards), Sami "Tundra" Uusitalo (bass), and Mathias "Vreth" Lillmåns (vocals). Finntroll's music often embraces the humppa style, a type of Finnish polka, creating a distinctive sound that has brought them international acclaim.
How to Sound Like Finntroll
Finntroll’s sonic landscape is characterized by an aggressive yet melodic blend that captures the frenetic energy of metal with the whimsical elements of folk music. The band’s sound is often dark and atmospheric, with a strong emphasis on rhythmic intensity and melodic richness. Guitars are typically tuned down to produce a heavy, driving sound, often layered with fast-paced riffs and melodic leads. The use of keyboards is crucial, adding a whimsical, almost theatrical quality through folk-inspired melodies and atmospheric textures. Drummers in the band maintain a relentless pace, employing both traditional metal blast beats and more intricate rhythmic patterns that reflect the folk influences. Vocals range from harsh, guttural growls to chant-like melodies, creating a dynamic interplay that complements the band’s complex arrangements. To capture Finntroll's unique sound, musicians might explore heavy distortion, folk-inspired scales, and varied rhythmic structures in their compositions.
