About
Mike + The Mechanics is a British rock supergroup formed in 1985 by Mike Rutherford, guitarist and bassist of Genesis. The band was originally conceived as a side project for Rutherford, alongside notable members such as Paul Carrack (vocals, keyboards) and Paul Young (vocals), complemented by Adrian Lee (keyboards) and Peter Van Hooke (drums). Known for their blend of rock, pop rock, and new wave, Mike + The Mechanics carved a niche with their melodic, radio-friendly sound, producing hits like "Silent Running" and "The Living Years". Over the years, the band has seen lineup changes, but their core appeal remains the same, merging emotive lyrics with catchy, anthemic melodies.
How to Sound Like Mike + The Mechanics
Mike + The Mechanics' sound is a sophisticated interplay of melodic richness and polished rock dynamics. Their music often features clean, chiming guitar tones and lush keyboard arrangements, resulting in a polished and accessible sound. Mike Rutherford's use of the Vox AC30 Guitar Combo Amp contributes to the band's bright and articulate guitar lines, while Paul Carrack's keyboards bring a textured layer that complements the band's melodic focus. The use of synthesizers, such as the Korg Wavestation A/D, adds a modern, ambient touch, crafting the band's signature blend of classic rock warmth and contemporary sheen. This sonic palette is ideal for musicians aiming to create music that's both emotionally resonant and sonically engaging.
