About

Gruntruck was a Seattle-based band that emerged from the vibrant grunge scene of the early '90s. Known for their heavy, post-grunge sound infused with elements of funk metal, the group was formed in 1990 by singer/guitarist Ben McMillan, who was previously part of the influential band Skin Yard. Joining him were Norman Scott on drums, Tommy Niemeyer on guitar, and Tim Paul on bass. Their music echoed the dark, powerful tones of their Seattle contemporaries, drawing comparisons to bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains. Gruntruck released two albums, Inside Yours and Push, which showcased their unique blend of aggressive riffs and melodic undertones.

How to Sound Like Gruntruck

Gruntruck's sound is characterized by its aggressive yet melodic nature, combining gritty guitar riffs with powerful rhythms. The use of a Gibson SG Special Electric Guitar by guitarist Tommy Niemeyer contributed to their robust, edgy tone. To add layers of texture and drive, Niemeyer often employed the B.K. Butler 911 Tube Driver, which helped create the raw, overdriven sound that defined many of their tracks. The inclusion of a Dunlop Cry Baby GCB-95 added a dynamic flair, allowing for expressive solos and a distinctive wah-infused voice. Gruntruck's music thrives on this combination of gritty textures and melodic elements, crafting a sound that is both forceful and engaging.
