About
HUM is an American alternative rock band hailing from Champaign, Illinois, celebrated for their dynamic blend of post-hardcore, space rock, slowcore, and shoegaze influences. The band is comprised of Matt Talbott (vocals, guitar), Tim Lash (guitar), Jeff Dimpsey (bass), and Bryan St. Pere (drums). Known for their expansive soundscapes and introspective lyrics, HUM rose to prominence in the 1990s and have maintained a cult following with their unique fusion of melodic riffs and atmospheric textures.
How to Sound Like HUM
HUM's sonic character is defined by its juxtaposition of heavy, distorted guitar tones and ethereal, ambient soundscapes. Their music often features layered guitars that create vast, immersive environments, achieved through the use of effects like the Boss DF-2 Super Feedbacker & Distortion and MXR M107 Phase 100. The combination of rich, harmonic overdrive from amplifiers like the Orange OR-120 and melodic, reverb-laden passages gives HUM their distinctive sound. The rhythm section, anchored by Dimpsey’s driving bass lines on the G&L SB-2, supports the band's explorations into both aggressive and tranquil sonic territories, making their music a compelling study in contrasts.
