About

Mama's Boys is a hard rock trio from Northern Ireland, formed by the McManus brothers: Pat McManus (guitar, vocals), John McManus (bass), and Tommy McManus (drums). Emerging during the early '80s in the wake of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, their music blends hard rock with elements of AOR (Adult Oriented Rock), drawing on a robust, energetic sound that garnered them a following in Europe. Despite their mild success overseas, their notable albums like Plug It In and Power and Passion didn't achieve significant traction in the U.S., although they did briefly capture attention with their cover of Slade's "Mama Weer All Crazee Now."

How to Sound Like Mama's Boys

The sound of Mama's Boys is characterized by powerful, riff-driven guitar work, a staple of the early '80s hard rock scene. Pat McManus's use of guitars like the Gibson Flying V and Gibson Les Paul Custom contributes to the band's bold, aggressive tone. His playing often features melodic solos and crunchy riffs, facilitated by the sustain and punch of these iconic instruments. The rhythmic foundation, held down by John's bass and Tommy's dynamic drumming, creates a driving, energetic backdrop. The tight, punchy drum sound is accentuated by Jimmy DeGrasso's use of the Pearl Reference Series, ensuring that each beat lands with precision and power. Together, these elements craft a sound that is both raw and polished, capturing the essence of their hard rock roots.
