About

McRad is a pioneering hardcore punk band that originated in Philadelphia in 1982. The group was founded by renowned skateboarder Chuck Treece (vocals, guitar) and fellow skater Zeke Zagar (drums). Known for their energetic and fast-paced sound, McRad blends elements of hardcore punk, skate punk, and proto-punk, with occasional ventures into metal, reggae, and jazz. Their music gained significant traction in the skateboarding community, especially on the West Coast, following the release of their album Absence of Sanity and their contributions to iconic skateboarding videos in the late '80s.

How to Sound Like McRad

McRad's sound is characterized by its aggressive, high-energy punk riffs and driving rhythms. To capture their raw and dynamic style, musicians should focus on achieving crisp, overdriven guitar tones that cut through the mix, while maintaining a tight, punchy rhythm section. Utilizing distortion pedals and tube amplifiers can help recreate the band's gritty sound. The bass should be fast and melodic, providing a solid counterpoint to the frenetic guitar work. Drummers attempting to emulate McRad's style should aim for rapid, precise beats with an emphasis on snare and cymbal play, capturing the urgency and intensity that defines the band's music. Overall, McRad's sound thrives on a balance of speed, precision, and raw energy, making it essential to combine powerful instrumentation with a relentless performance ethos.
