Morphine emerged from Cambridge, Massachusetts, as a unique power-trio that captivated critics, influenced peers, and garnered a devoted global following. The band was composed of Mark Sandman (2-string slide bass, vocals), Dana Colley (baritone saxophone), and drummers Billy Conway and original member Jerome Deupree. They defied conventional rock norms by embracing a minimalist "less is more" philosophy in their music, which Sandman coined as "low rock." This distinctive style blended rock, alternative rock, blues rock, and Boston rock, characterized by Sandman's smoky baritone and the band's stripped-down instrumentation.
